Now, on your Dutch round-trip, and me being torn from the Dutch clay, I have some comments on your top 10:

1. Windmills: Actually, you know that we have them just to keep our feet dry?
2. Tulips. Good heavens! Didn't know they even translated that song into English. I'm sorry...
3. Beer: here I agree. You've lauded Belgium beers before and rightly so. And especially regarding Heineken - what the French call with a lot of irony "bière de prestige": it is piss.
4. Bicycles: Oh yes, national pride! And we're very good in the wind and climbing the dykes...
5. Delftware: You forgot it's main feature: it's blue (and you can pour your Heineken into it - used or unused, the Heineken...).
6. Famous painters: Ah, you chose the most depressing! Think of van Gogh (not his ears!), Mondriaan, Kees van Dongen, Karel Appel (of the Cobra movement); some of them inspired album covers, but not for Yes.
7. Beautiful canals: Now this is giving me some climate change nostalgia, remembering the good times ice skating on the canals in Amsterdam... You can't decently compare that to Birmingham...
8. Cheese: Ah, sorry to hear you're allergic to that. So I cannot comfort you with some French cheese... You know, there was a French TV-ad for Dutch cheese: "The other cheese country". Of course, nobody thought of the UK...
9. Wooden clogs: I must admit that it's at least 37 years that I haven't used them, but they were quite comfortable.
10. Liquorice sweet candies: Our "drop" is one of the best out there in so many different flavours and so good that your Bertie Bassett would be happy to suck on it for the rest of his life...

And regarding those nice ladies behind windows in that famous neighbourhood of Amsterdam, my first time was probably also my parents first time... My father had to go to Amsterdam for his job so it became a day out for all of us. He working, we kids were strolling with our mother through the city centre and she promised us we would get some refreshments. So, when I, five years old, saw a nice lady behind a window I thought we could get a drink there... My mother didn't agree. It took some time before we got to our drinks...
Later in my life I lived for eight years in that wonderful city, but I never found that nice lady again... (I had many drinks, however).

Just love this, Kees. Wonderful stuff, thank you.

I must, therefore, try the famous “drop”. Also, you never really forget that first love, do you? LOL

Regarding beer, we have improved a little bit during the last 40 years. We are no longer forced to drink the late Freddy's elephants piss. Some of the first and second tier breweries have looked over our southern borders and created some great special beers that can give even the Belgian masters a glimpse of contest. Moreover, regional beers are booming as well. We have an increasing number of vineyards as well (my mother gave me a bottle of wine for my birthday, a few years ago, from a vineyard only a quartermile from her home) and there are 21 whisky distilleries in our small flat country today.

Actually, now I think about it a bit more, it may have been the root to my problem of choosing between ladies or drinks... Will talk to my psychiatrist about it (his name is Ardbeg and he smells like peat...).

Today, as it is Saturday across the paradise we called Planet Prog Archives, we examine the affairs of a relative of prog royalty. Yep, whilst the rest of you spend the weekend luxuriating, drinking, smoking, rumpy pumpying, and gardening, your fearless reporter manages to combine all of these extracurricular activities with a wee bit of birthday research.

Yep, I thought you might like to be introduced to a prog musician’s sister, and quite a famous musician at that. For on 6 May 2008, samiam2029 joined our site, and posted once without being seen since. This was not, though, any old post. Oh no! For Samantha Cattaneo is Mike Portnoy’s sister, and she posted to alert the brethren of a special charity auction of DT stuff to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=48403 At the time, our Samantha worked for said camp, and here is their website, which still appears to be undertaking some fantastic work Camp Good Days In a serious note, any charity which supports young kids with the ravages of cancer absolutely deserves our support.

Samantha no longer works for this charity, and is based in Syracuse working for Velocitel LLP Samantha Cattaneo - Financial Operations Specialist - Velocitel, LLC | LinkedIn This lot are a wireless network company, owned by a firm called Qualtek Velocitel, LLC | LinkedIn https://qualtekservices.com/services/ She is a “financial operations specialist”, which, in truth, does sound quite a bit more bland than being a top rated rock drummer like her wonderfully hirsute brother.

But, my friends, there is a lesson for all of us here. Behind every rock superstar lies the sort of apple pie family just like the rest of us mere mortals, and this is a decent reminder of that truth.

So! Happy Birthday, Samantha! Let’s hope it’s not Systematic Chaos there in NY!

The PA Birthday Thread Award for sheer persistence in numbers of registrations goes to Michael Divers, who is 29 today. He registered as cynthias_mallet, cynthiasmallet, and sellingengland. He did post a number of times in his second incarnation, but of note is his gloriously bonkers in a touching yoof way blog site. Take a look at this; The Reece Archive and this You're Harsh Unfortunately, I cannot find any up to date trace of our mad friend, which strikes me as a bit of a shame. Anyhoo, happy birthday, sir!

In current member news, we wish 63rd special day felicitations to Progfan1958, or Steve Perry as his parents named him in that momentous year for Canada. Steve posts regularly, is interested in The Human Condition, so quite obviously really should love this particular thread of musing on said condition, and wishes peace to us all in more languages than you could shake a stick at. Happy birthday, sir!

And that is not all. Silvertree, or Jean-François Cousin, a Prog Reviewer hereabouts, is celebrating his 52nd birthday today in Frogland. Joyeux Anniversaire, monsieur!

Today, we pay attention to the affairs of Bongo71, or Eric Smith as his not particularly imaginative parents named him in, by an astounding coincidence, erm, 1971.

Yes, our friend Eric is the big five oh today, and he joined the throbbing mass which is the progger bear pit on 6 April 2008, lasting for an extraordinarily measly 20 minutes without being seen or heard from again.

Now, a bongo can mean different things to different people. It can be a drum. It can, however, also be a South African nocturnal antelope. It can even, if you are a resident or visitor to Edinburgh, be a fantastic nightlife venue, although normal activities have been halted owing to the ongoing lurgy saga The Bongo Club - Edinburgh, Scotland

Our Eric hails from Nashua, New Hampshire, which, if Mayor Donchess is to be believed (and why would he not be), is committed to building a welcoming and neighbourly (note to Mr Mayor. That is how you spell it. It comes fitted with a u. In fact, I have always found the u in neighbourly to be utterly essential) atmosphere; Nashua, NH | Official Website As with many politico blurbs, this does suggest to intelligent personages that the reality is that said Nashua is not, at present, particularly welcoming or neighbourly without a little bit of Mayoral intervention, in which case Mr Laz could not possibly recommend relocating there to his readers. Sorry!

What particularly caught my eye about Eric was his occupation. He listed this as a “phone concierge”. Not unreasonably, I asked myself, what the f**k is a phone concierge? Somebody who carries a dog and bone for a rich capitalist pig dog to speak into because he’s too bloody idle to do it himself? Someone who has to stay by the phone constantly in order to provide drinkies and entertainment for someone on the other end of the line?

Well, it is something like this. Take a look at the Sadbook page for Eric. Eric Peyton Smith | Facebook  He worked for Aspire Lifestyles  (extraordinary every  time!) as a Customer Service Representative. And, looking at his duties, running around after said fat cats was the gig: “Telephone concierge for AMEX platinum and centurion card members assisting with various requests including, but not limited to, dining suggestions and reservations, event ticket sales, floral arrangements and delivery, emergency roadside assistance, vacation planning, etc”. Personally, I’d rather be a bongo!

However, as Sadderthaneverbook makes clear, Eric thankfully moved clear of this life of servitude, and is now the owner of Heart Song Productions in Northfield, NH, having obviously grown rightly tired himself of Mayor Donchess’ false dawns. The business, if it still exists, for which a wee bit of doubt exists, was that of a DJ with a personal touch at your special event. So, if there is anybody from New Hampshire thinking about joining the happy throng of blissfully married people, then Eric is the man to play 21st Century Schizoid Man as the first dance with your newly minted missus. I would, actually, recommend this, by the way, chaps. Make clear your intent to make a glorious racket throughout your married life from the outset. Give her a bit of Gaga, and she will want Gaga all the time! It simply isn’t worth it!

So! Happy Birthday Eric! Spin us a tune! Do you take orders over the phone still?

Elsewhere in proggerland, we send our prog love and felicitations to our dear friend Shadowyzard. Ozgur hails from Ankara in the land of Atta Turk, and is 40 today. He joined our beloved brethren in February last year, and has been a prolific contributor ever since. Happy birthday, sir! We love you! I won’t tell anybody that you previously signed up as Durakonis, honest! Or, indeed, as Edwin Odesseiron! Try not to forget the password this time!

^ Thank you Laz. Even if it weren't for your kind words, I sincerely want to say (perhaps should have said earlier) that you're a witty and kind person. Your sense humour is also excellent (British, eh?).

Actually I'm quite a lunatic in terms of multiple account disorder here. I might even have an account going back to 2004. 2005 is certain, as Xymphony was my first that I remember, on here.

Cheers sir! Party

Hey, Ozgur! Thanks for the kind words, and hope you are having a wonderful day.

My tastes in humour are mainly the same as those in music, i.e. British, but more specifically English. I am, in fact, part Maltese as well, and am a citizen there as well as here.

I have to write every one of my passwords down, and, indeed, now only use four for all sites I go onto. The sooner they introduce voice recognition, the better for me!

Not like stereotyping and all, but all the Canadian members I see here are great. Honestly. You are one awesome old fart. Embarrassed

Thanks! I guess I prefer casting my spells to the posts, rather/more than on people. The universe should appreciate it! LOL

Thanks Steve. Always an interesting and occasionally a very surprising person, you are... with an agile mind. We all need surprises. That's a strong asset, and very important for this site methinks. Be it sometimes a bad surprise... Better than dullness. Wink

Also, most active members here are older than me. Even though I may seem like behaving in a way like my wisdom is equal to yours, I assure you that if/when needed; I would take your insights in like a little brother. We are here for having fun, so perhaps it hasn't been very necessary as of yet. Smile
