"I could record an album of farts in the middle of Fifth Avenue and I wouldn't lose any voters" (Porkupine Trump). "I could incite an angry mob to storm PA and still have huge support." The Trump analogy is meant to say more about certain perceptions of the fanbase than the object of adoration from the fanbase in case it's not clear to all. I quite like the early stuff myself, and actually prefer it to the later music. But like with Trump, sometimes the fans have been considered rather of the extreme fanboy type who will accept and highly rate anything and everything. I have seen as much bashing of Wilson's fans as I have seen bashing of Wilson (perhaps mostly from Micky). Some of the Wilson dislike hasn't been as much about his music as comments he has made. See this topic for instance, Steven Wilson a hater? (CLICK) I'm making no judgment of any of his comments, and do remember that he has posted here and may still check the forum now and then. By the way, I wouldn't describe On the Sunday of Life... as Heavy Prog, more as Psych Alt. Prog. And to me it doesn't fit very well with the heavy classic heavy hitters in the poll. ^ I've been a fan of Steven Wilson ever since he said, "I hate boy bands" at a concert performance.
And on the subject of Porcupine Tree, I wouldn't consider their first album to be Heavy Prog either, but it's better - and less controversial - than including Porcupine Tree in a Neo Prog poll again.

My favourite PT releases are the early ones - up until Signify. But I’ve never been a fan of the debut as a whole. Grab the Stars Die compilation, and you’ve more or less got what’s worth getting from Sunday. I’m not saying it’s impossible for someone to think Sunday is the best album in this list, but it does strike me as unlikely if they’ve listened to most/all of the albums I’m it. It seems more likely that people are voting for the band, rather than the album. 🤷🏻♂️
I think the analogy with Trump is quite apt, in terms of the fanbase of each. 😄 |

Neo Prog should not be let out of the Matrix. ;) I think of PT as on the Nu-Prog side, meaning not just modern (comparatively to the classic Prog era) but in having alternative rock elements. I like Ni-Prog, which is what the knights who say Ni were about until they became the knights who say ""Ekky-ekky-ekky-ekky-z'Bang, zoom-Boing, z'nourrrwringnmmm" which basically refers to kinds of avant prog. |

I was not making a comment about PT or SW being worthy of being on the list from a quality standpoint by the way. I just mean that they never would have been put in Heavy in the first place if they never recorded their last four albums. Before that, we have the Psych/Space phase, and then that transitional phase that probably would have landed them in Crossover if it was a separate band.
Paul, if you extended the poll to an eighth entry, as you said, that would actually be their first release that could be considered "Heavy Prog" by this site, In Absentia. Unless Voyage 34 is used, in which case, we'd have to wait for poll #9. Far be it from me to tell you how to run your polls, but I probably would have just started with In Absentia if I were to include them. However, you may be unfamiliar with their discography, or you simply don't care. Either is fine by me. Not judging. It'll just be weird seeing The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify do well (and potentially win) one of these sub-genre polls when it's for Heavy as opposed to P/S.

Steven Wilson can get a bit prickly when it comes to categorising Porcupine Tree's music, but I just went along with PA's Heavy Prog definition this time around, mainly because it's less controversial than including Porcupine Tree in a Neo Prog poll again.

There are some I don't listened yet, but we have here three classic albums I really love: Gravy Train, Quatermass and Sea Shanties.
Gravy Train +1 (my favorite from them)

Unusually for me, I've actually listened to 15 of the albums in this poll, which makes it hard to decide who to vote for.

Not very familiar with British heavy. Voted Fields, Heep (I'm not a fan, but their debut is ok) is runner-up.
