Some love for two of the greatest of the less often exploited 15ish minute epic format. Not quite sidelong, but significantly over the standard 10ish minute epics.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I figured these two songs were so iconic around here that the band names wouldn't really be necessary.

true voted Awaken. I wonder though how many songs called Awaken are there?

I find it really interesting that there aren't very many famous prog songs around the 15 minute mark. There are plenty of songs between 6-8 minutes (long songs/short epics), plenty between 9-13(standard epics), and of course the handful of really famous ones that go anywhere between about 18 and 25 minutes long (sidelong epics). But as for songs between about 14 and 16 minutes (long epics) there really aren't many famous ones at all. I wonder why that is.

Gotta vote Baker Street here. Hot take, but Awaken peaks in the first 5 minutes.

One of Yes's best against one to which I prefer much of Tull's work. Awaken.

I've no idea who Baker Street Muse is by, but I doubt if it's Gerry Rafferty, so Yes, I vote for Awaken again.

You mean it doesn't peak later (just before it all quietens down again at the end)? Anyway, I like Baker St Muse but this is an easy win for Yes.

I'm surprised I didn't know that, considering I've recently listened to all 35 of Jethro Tull's albums in a 5-day marathon.

Yeah I don't really know what it is but i've never really liked the lyrics or vocal melodies at the end. I think that big playout at the end feels like it's really trying to be uplifting but it just sorta misses the mark for me and it kinda leaves me feeling a little frustrated. Maybe i'm spoiled by the absolutely flooring conclusion to Gates of Delerium, but yeah i've never been into the second half of that song for some reason.

This leads to a question my high school English teacher liked to ask. "Did you really listen, or just hear?" In any case, Awaken for me. |

Yes, but I've listened to a hundred more albums since then and I'd have to have a memory like an elephant to remember the name of every Jethro Tull song.
