Curious here. Which of these two 1985 records do you find to be more progressive, however it is you define that term? For me it's Rush. Though the songs don't have the stylistic hallmarks of the classic 70s prog records, they fuse together 80s synth pop and new wave aesthetics with a hard rock backbone and a prog sophistication in a way that I'm not sure many other bands (if any other bands) were doing at the time. Maybe Saga? Misplaced Childhood, on the other hand, seems to me to dig its heels into a midpoint between mid-70s Genesis and Pink Floyd and ride that wave as far as it will go with some mildly updated production. Still a great album, but not very progressive to me.
But I want to hear what y'all think!

I wouldn't use either as an example of this style of music.
I'll go with Marillion, if only for the longer songs.

As you’ve used the word progressive, rather than prog, my answer is Rush.
Had you asked which is more prog, the answer would have been less clear-cut, but I’d probably have gone with Marillion. Loads of bands can be progressive without being prog. Power Windows is my least favourite and least listened to Rush album. I own it only because it came in a boxset. But for all the reasons you’ve given, I can recognise that is is a progressive album, even if it’s not for me. And, again for the reasons you’ve given, Power Windows is considerably more progressive than Misplaced Childhood, which is prog for sure, but hardly progressive. |

Marillion all the way. There is just a glimpse of prog on Power Windows.

I saw both tours: Rush were a boring disappointment (Birmingham, UK); Marillion a triumph - heights they never attained again (Milton Keynes Bowl, UK).

Good question. I went with Marillion, as for me PW was more of a regression. I can't get on with it and I think that's because it moved too far away from their great progressive albums. You could call that a progression, but I call it a regression....

The Marillion album is more 'progressive' but I still prefer Rush. I grew out of Misplaced Childhood quite soon after being obsessed with it, shortly after it's release. Some of the songs are great, some are just awful beyond measure (Lavender) It's all a bit 'poor me'
PW is not one of Rush's finer efforts and has a thin layer of cheese across it's surface, but it still has the intelligent songwriting characteristic of the band, and I actually think the brash production works very well with the music on some tracks, notably Manhattan Project and Marathon. Less so on Big Money where it lacerates your ear drums with tacky synth stabs, and ear piercing guitar dynamics. |

Marillion - Misplaced Childhood is more progressive than Rush - Power Windows, despite I like very much of both.

Marillion, in this context, and I love RRUUSSHH, so it was an interesting poll.

I see I'm in the minority!
Tell me, Marillion voters, how do you define progressive? And for the heck of it, does it mean the same thing as prog?

I like Rush a lot but to me Power Windows is a pop/rock album and I'm no fan of their 80s output. Marillion is my choice as being more progressive.
