So I have been hearing the Nine Feet Underground suite by Caravan for a little bit, and I am sort of confused on what it is about? It is mostly instrumental with two sets of lyrics, making it quite difficult to figure out.

Yes, I'm as lost as you are, so maybe somebody can enlighten us.

I initially thought it was about transitioning into some sort of afterlife. But after giving it a few more spins, I wasn't sure.

Like, "Love's a Friend" seemed to me like it was about not being sure if you're "on the other side". And "Disassotiation" was about accepting the fact of having passed away.

Maybe it has something to do with love, since some of Grey and Pink's tracks are sort of like ones. I really like the tone of the song.

Funny, it never even occurred to me before to pay attention to the lyrics. It’s one of those tunes where the music has enough of an emotional arc that the lyrics don’t matter much. I’m curious now though.

From loudersounds.com: Richard Sinclair says "“With Nine Feet Underground they were individual pieces, but with continually playing them through, and because each piece was only about five minutes long or something, I found it quite interesting to join bits up. I think it evolved, really. And this idea of doing one long number, I’d completely sorted it out well before we went into the studio. I was living in a basement flat at the time that was nine feet under ground level.”

This is likely the reason why the two sets of lyrics seem to have no relation to each other

It's like 6 feet underground, but deeper.

It's about shagging your bird and feeling alright.

Like most songs, apart from the ones that are about not shagging your bird and feeling bloody miserable.

It's a David Sinclair composition, not Richard's.

I used to think it was pun on being buried a bit deeper into the ground, but indeed, Dave said it was because he lived in a basement. Kind of ruins the Canterbury legend, doesn't it?

It doesn't ruin anything for me:) I like that they came up with this title in their typical unpretentious and humorous approach. Its really quite common that great titles has similar back stories such as this one anyway. Even regarding more "serious" bands and artists. Coming up with a mysterious and profound sounding title from living in a basement "nine feet underground" is really part of what being creative is all about, I think.

for me it is the thoughts of a dead man (provided dead people can still think) about a love he had in his life. hence the title "Nine Feet Underground"

I'm not sure it's about anything.
