i just listened to rick wakeman's journey to the center of the earth and the first part of the battle where the two sea monsters were fighting has some of the most dramatic and deep keyboards i've ever heard. it was just really cool. emerson lake and palmer's great gates of kiev also has really cool and dramatic keyboards. what are some other keyboard gems like this?

Thanks - I’m aware of the Kino band but thought the poster was using it as an adjective?

One of my favorite keyboard-centric pieces. Toshio Egawa is the keyboardist. Incendiary playing right up there with Wakeman, Emerson, van der Linden, MacKay, Rudess, Jim Gilmour, Roger Powell, i.e. all your favorites.

Have you heard the two Rick albums that come before and after Journey? Those would be the six wives of Henry VIII and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. If you haven't heard those two yet you need to check them out(especially King Arthur).
When you list all the qualities that you despise and you realize you're describing yourself.

Speaking of Rick Wakeman, here's a post-1970s doozy from 1984 and the opener from the recent The Red Planet.

Thought he meant 'key note' abbreviated.

Anyway there are tons of course especially by the main suspects Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. Always trying to out do each other!!

Less flamboyant but equally as good is Tony Banks (Apocalypse section of Suppers Ready, In The Cage and load of others)

I'm sure there loads more as certainly the 70's had some fantastic players but generally the best keyboard solos came from those three. (imo)

Did you like the track I posted from The Red Planet? If so, you'll want to hear the whole album. Best thing Rick's done in a while.

A few years ago, Rick recorded a pair of albums with an entirely analog(ue) setup, called Retro and Retro 2. Both albums have songs and instrumentals. Retro 2 has more instrumentals. Definitely give those a whirl on YT if you enjoy what Rick does.

The very first Wakeman with Wakeman (Rick and Adam) is a good one. No vocals.

If you enjoyed (?) the Gerard track, there's a lot more of that, via Motoi Sakuraba, Ars Nova, Social Tension, etc.

I do like the RW Retro albums. Lots of retro synthesisers obviously! Out There is also a corker.

Try Triumvirat. They have some amazing keyboard solos all over their albums.
