^The term big was not to be taken literally and your choices were to be your own, not PA's. Thanks for your effort.

From a strictly PA, semi-empirical (eye testing without taking the time to count) perspective, using the years in question, 200 total rating and 4 star average, the answer seems to be...I don't think their really is a big 6. These are the closest that meet the criteria who started making albums after 2001.

Riverside
Wobbler
Haken
Steven Wilson

As noted above, it's hard to consider Wilson as his work with PT started way before 2001. But technically he qualifies.

If you throw out the 2001 band genesis requirement it would be something like.

Big Big Train
Riverside
Wobbler
Porcupine Tree
Opeth
Steven Wilson

From my personal perspective, I am not sure that anything that dominates my listening falls into a "big" anything category.

Fair point, but this criticism can't apply to those posts that were made before the OP edited his post to include a cut off date.
You are correct. My edited post explained the years I was asking for. However, even after editing... some still picked bands/artists that didn't met the criteria.

Steven Wilson, Neal Morse and Transatlantic shouldn't count in my view because they have all released music before or are made up entirely of musicians who have.

Frost*
Moon Safari
Beardfish
Riverside
Ciccada
The Watch

Also considered:

Haken
Lost World
Hourglass
Voyager
Thieves' Kitchen
Jordsjø
Barock Project
Tiger Moth Tales
Antique Seeking Nuns / Sanguine Hum
Kotebel
Karfagen / Sunchild

Riverside
Haken
Wobbler
This Winter Machine
The Tangent
Moon Safari
(I'd like to include Mostly Autumn, but their debut was 1998. Same with Big Big Train, who debuted in 1994. IQ, Pendragon and Arena are all wonderful, but far too old.)

Thanks for your comment. I have gotten used to forum folks not reading the OP. I have done it myself.

I'm ignoring the cut-off date because it's irrelevant to the concept.

Transatlantic
Big Big Train
Wobbler
Opeth
Haken
Steven Wilson

The above artists seem to move the needle a bit more than most other Modern Prog bands. In truth, all six should be Prog Metal acts as they have bigger fan bases...Devin Townsend probably sells more product than Lifesigns or Jordsjo.

I don’t want to make an individual list since that would just be another topic with «Your top six in the 21st century». The point with the big six is that they were big and reached a wide audience. This means that some highly acclaimed bands on PA, but with a low number of ratings, isn’t included.

In an attempt to do the same, I used the PA list as a reference and came up with the following which are potential artists or bands for such a list. I looked for bands with one or multiple higher ranked albums with at least several hundred ratings

Steven Wilson (England)
Riverside (Poland)
Wobbler (Norway)
The Mars Volta (USA)
Haken (England)
Between The Buried And Me (USA)
Beardfish (Sweden)
Gazpacho (Norway)
Leprous (Norway)

At first, I thought this would be easy. Then I looked at my collection and so many bands/artists were available... and all very good:
  • Agents of Mercy
  • Barock Project
  • Bent Knee
  • Brighteye Brison
  • Emmett Elvin
  • Estradasphere *
  • Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion
  • Frost*
  • Haken
  • Jack O' the Clock
  • Jordsjø
  • Karcius
  • Karmakanic
  • Lalle Larsson
  • Leprous
  • Major Parkinson
  • Malady
  • Moon Safari
  • Moulettes
  • Paatos
  • Seven Steps to the Green Door
  • The Tangent
  • Tirill
  • Toxic Smile *
  • Transatlantic *
  • Tusmørke
  • Anna Von Hausswolff
  • Steven Wilson
  • Wobbler
* first album released in 2000, does it count?

It's almost impossible for me to choose the 6 best elements.

But let's say Bent Knee, Emmett Elvin, Estradasphere, Haken, Jack O' the Clock, Karmakanic, Major Parkinson, The Tangent, Tirill, Wobbler as top 10.

Then at gunpoint I would say Bent Knee, Haken, Major ParkinsonThe TangentTirillWobbler for a top 6.
