for those of us who are drummers, what size of kit do you play....does size really matter, or does it hinder? personally i play a 4 piece small kit with 2 crashes and a ride, and i play heavily progressive music with my bands.....
there is no spoon...

My kit is an 11 piece Sonor with 10 Zildjian cymbals,and three Simmons SDS hexagonal electronic drums.

I am a fan of the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach to drum kits,ala Peart,Portnoy,Carey.

To actually answer the question: I play the basic four piece with a hi-hat and one crash. I want to get a ride but i need money. Though i would prefer a set with a whole bunch of stuff: Two crashes, a ride, bout 3 different sized splashes, a cowbell (or even better three or so different sized ones), a piccalo snare, and roto-toms. Those things are awesome. I would like to try my hand at those electronic things, but that is just complicated for me.

I've got an electric set..the pintech tour elite...it's a 6 piece with woven mesh heads.  My last set was a cheapo pearl export.  I love my electric set..it's nice because I can play whenever I want, and recording is a breeze.  I do really want a real set again.  Despite how "real" my electric set feels, nothing will beat a real drum set. 
Improvement makes straight roads, but the crooked roads without improvement, are roads of genius.

I'm actually the bassist/keyboardist/guitarist in my band, but I play the drums sometimes.  I use my little brother's set, which is a 4-piece Percussion Plus set with Evans Genera-coated G2 heads (no front head on the bass, though) with Ziljian ZBT series cymbals (16" crash, 20" ride, 14" hi-hats), a Latin Percussion cowbell, a Latin Percussion tambourine (mounted on a stand), a DW 7000 double pedal, and Vic Firth sticks.  But then, sometimes I use our drummer's set, which is an expanded Ludwig Accent set (8, 10, 12, 13, and 16 inch toms, 22-inch bass, 14 inch snare) with the same heads, Paiste 302 (14" hi-hats, 16" crash, 22" ride) and 502 (14" crash), Ludwig single pedal, and a small army of cowbells.  Sometimes we'll add all of the cybmals to the Ludwig set, that's good fun!

Snare, two pairs of hanging toms, a side drum, two cymbals and a crash cymbal, hi-hat and bass drum is my equipment. Oh, and a cow-bell. A twelve-piece set. But I could play with less. A real good drummer doesn't need a showy kit. On the contrary, I distrust drummers who have too much in their kit. I especially don't like those who play with two bass drums. What on earth does one need two bass drums for, if not for showing off? Which is ridiculous, by the way; I don't get impressed by long bass drum whirls at all. Anyone can do that with two bass drums. But if you know the technique you can be very effective and even do very small whirls with a single bass drum. Drummers with two bass drums are losers.
