After looking at Poland, I think it would be very appropriate with the rest of the Eastern Europe - if that has had your interest, as well. I'd like to include Greece here because otherwise, I doubt it would be listed.

I can't speak for the thread opener, but to me, it seems anything east of the old Iron Curtain and Yugoslavia and Greece (& Cyprus) sound "Eastern European" - though I'm not sure I would include the three Baltic countries.

That was what I was wondering. Where the line was drawn. So Baltics out, but Belarus (for example), in?

I checked with Wiki to see what they said, and it is fairly obvious there is no real consensus about what is or is not considered Eastern Europe, but leaving the Baltic States out, this is the list from the music on my iPod of the countries that can be considered Eastern Europe:

I guess the point of my post, if there were one at all, would have been to illustrate the difficulty I would have to list my favourite 12 East European albums. This list is just from my iPod, and I can probably find more if I look on my external hard drive, or within my CDs.

I understand when people ask for favourite releases from one country, but as soon as you get into greater regions, I find it kind of crazy! I mean, I find it difficult enough to find my 12 favourite albums from just one country!

Also, consider that, because of the way you worded the question, I didn’t include the 42 artists from Poland that are on my iPod. But ultimately that was not the point of my post, even if that’s a point that could be made from my list.

I wasn’t kidding about working out what my 12 favourites are from my list. Why would I have been? Ultimately, I will find it easier to work out my favourite 12, if I have a list to work from. 

I think, also, that my list is going to be subject to recency bias, and deliberately so - simoly because it is easier to create a list of 12, if I go by what I’m most enjoying at the moment, rather than attempt to work out an all-time favourite.

I think there are 20 Ukrainian artists and 30 Russian on my iPod, so I could work out a top 12 from Ukraine, and another top 12 from Russia. I’ve already mentioned the 42 Polish artists, and I’ve still not worked out my favourite albums from them!

It’s no criticism on my part, and I meant no point by my list except to assist me, but if you see my list as pointless, I won’t argue that, except to say that what is the point in anything? It’s subjective, of course. I see no point in attempting to work out my 12 favourite East European albums, but I’m still doing it….. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi,

In the film BEFORE THE RAIN (Macedonia) ... there was some music by a band called Anastasia that to my knowledge never really existed. That opening piece was excellent and set a great mood for the film, and it is a shame that there was not more music or an album by such a band. I would have bought that album! And instead I got the soundtrack to the film!

It was an opening that reminded me of the way we looked at "AGUIRRE" ... you just sat there and ... went wow ... before the whole thing even started ... a hypnotic experience, you could say!

The way I see it, is to tell others about some of one's personal favourites so, they might get inspired to give them a listen, or at least so they get acquainted with one's taste.
Something else quite important as I see it, is to put focus on some countries which otherwise may not get so much attention.

In my case, "the choosing of the favourites" was pretty easy here because I just listed those 12 albums, I've found being fond of over the (many) years.

Poland is part of Eastern Europe, but had its own post. I feel like other Eastern European countries could also have had their own posts, too. By asking for favourite albums from the whole of Eastern Europe, rather than individual countries within that area (as was the case for Poland), then several countries will still be under-represented in the lists, simply because of “big guns” like Russia.

There are several Eastern European countries for which I know no music, and I’d love to be directed to music from those countries.

By the way, my list is till getting shorter….. 😜

Yes, I can see the problem and inequality, but I did it with my own collection and preferences as the starting point, and others can try to do threads with the other countries individually. I can tell about myself that I have other plans, and no more albums I'm fond of from Eastern Europe.

Just a suggestion!

Eastern Europe is a HUUUUUGE landmass and not well defined

I would break down these "prog zones" as such

Russia

Ukraine, Belarus & Moldova

Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)

Central nations (Poland, Hungary, Czech Rep, Slovakia)

Balkan nations (Romania, Bulgaria, Albania & Former Yugoslavia [Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia])

Greece if counted should really be in its own category possibly with Turkey which has a sliver of territory that is considered Europe (even though the Eurasian landmass is divided solely for cultural purposes.)

As for choosing albums, way too many for me to count.

Some would also included Caucus nations such as Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan as Eastern Europe but seems a stretch in my view considering the Caucus range is technically what divides Europe from Asia.

Also Eastern Germany which used to be considered Eastern Europe could be thrown into the Central nations category.
