I would have to say it is a toss up between Soil Festivities and Direct.  Direct is excellent because of it's more varied content, but at the same time, Soil Festivities is excellent because of it's focus.  I voted for Soil Festivities because it didn't have a vote yet, but could have easily voted for Direct too.

Not an easy choice, but at the end, I voted for Chariots of Fire.

Rhapsodies - Irene Papas is simply the best vocalist Vangelis ever worked with.

Mask, largely because Movement 4 is one of my favorite pieces from him. After that, Antarctica, Direct, Soil Festivities, and Chariots of Fire.

A slew of wonderful records. Rewind a few years, and I'm voting for Direct...

...but this is here and now — Soil Festivities is simply one of the best from the Van man. I'm glad others have voted for it, too.

Mask although it takes a bit of getting used to. Some of Vangelis best work is in the eighties for sure. After about 1985 he moved back to Greece  , Athens more specifically. Most of his best work was 1975-1985 (West London - Spheric studios I think) with Mask representing a full circle from Heaven and Hell and both featuring the English Chamber Choir heavily..

I hate that album. The song featuring Jon in particular. The Italian electro-pop duo (Chrisma) tells a ridicolous story, if you understand Italian.
It's the only album in his huge discography that I really don't like.
Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.

I choose Direct  which contains tight, song-like instrumentals, some of them very beautiful and always at least pleasant. Personally, it has a notable place in my listening history.

Soil Festivities and Mask have some spellbinding material (especially Soil's two first movements) but fail to impress me on the course of the entire album. And so fails Chariots of Fire, sad to say.

See You Later is actually quite charming (but admittedly strikingly uneven) for being such an unusual and playful Vangelis album.

I like all of those albums you mentioned, but Rapsodies easily wins my vote in this poll. Smile

Chariots of Fire contains half soundtrack material and half the Suite that utilises some key themes from the s/t. I always thought the Suite was great but I had less positive feelings for the rest.
