I just finished listening to a copy of Gowan's Strange Animal LP that I just bought and what an absolute pleasure. A perfect pristine copy beginning to end, but it got me thinking, he has all the elements of a prog band and album here but it clearly seems to be a pop album to me. And I'm fine with that, most of his others are in that same category, but there are other great examples as well. Yes' 90125, GTR, ASIA, Zon, Styx, Supertramp etc.

But what less obvious ones am I missing?

Who are the Top of the Pop-gressive bands and what albums straddle the line of Pop/Prog ?

Two of my pop-gressive favourites:
Nik Kershaw. The video version actually starts like a piece of avantgarde-electronic. Big smile

I am shocked to see Nogbad_The_Bad posting in pop progressive thread.
Ian - I thought you are more of a RIO/Avant-prog enthusiast. XTC is pretty good choice. I watched recently Thyme's Jones interview. He mentioned that "The Why Album", Cheer-Accident pop prog album was influenced by XTC.
What else? Some of 10cc and Supertramp songs are both: pop-y and prog-y at the same time. How about early Talk Talk? My all-time favorite pop progressive song is "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers. I always considered Renaissance and Curved Air (at least some of their albums) to be part of pop progressive subgenre.

The Tourists - Luminous Basement (1980)

The third and final album of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart's pre-Eurythmics band has quite a few proggy moments - such a shame that it was somewhat overlooked.

Possibly the best proggy track...

This is actually a non-album b-side which is also quite interesting.

Well known, but The Moody Blues, Alan Parsons, and David Bowie are all on that line.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"
