So based on a little info that can be found on the vinyl forum http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=96107 I started to wonder...

Would any of you here buy the 'equivalent' of K-Tel's 24 Explosives Hits record if it contained tunes by various prog artists? I know physical media is still a hard sell, but I'd kill to have a VA Prog album.

I guess the next logical question is...
If you had double album format with around 24 mins per side to utilize, what would be your ideal explosive hits compilation?

I’ve always asked this question to myself, and it would be really hard for me to choose which songs I would choose, since there are so many gems I like a lot.

First LP would be songs recorded before the year 2000. Second LP would be songs recorded later than 2000. But I don't buy vinyl. If you did a double CD you could include a lot more music.

Well, if you wanted to stick with the K-Tel format then you would need about 10-13 songs per side, each around 2:30 in length (they actually cut songs short to fit them). Not sure what the length of a side would be, but I would guess at the least 25 minutes and maybe as much as 30 minutes.

With that in mind, and my apologies for not following the OP's rules, and trying to keep each side at 10 tracks timing under 25:00:

Side 1:
1. Gentle Giant - The Queen (1:40)
2. Upsilon Acrux - Boa vs. Crab (2:55)
3. Bob Drake - Weeds (2:46)
4. Genesis - Harold the Barrel (2:55)
5. After Crying - Noktürn (1:52)
6. Banda Elástica - Plegaria miasmática (2:08)
7. Bacamarte - Pássaro de luz (2:28)
8. Sc'ööf - Gegen unerwünschtes Katzenverhalten (2:07)
9. Zombi - Mission Creep (3:09)
10. Pink Floyd - The Gnome (2:13)

Total 24:13

Side 2:
1. Henry Cow - Bittern Storm Over Ulm (2:44)
2. Thinking Plague - Run Amok (3:11)
3. This Heat - Shrink Wrap (1:41)
4. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Two Part Invention in D Minor (1:58)
5. Ultimate Spinach - Funny Freak Parade (2:35)
6. Camel - Supertwister (3:20)
7. Hawkwind - Psychosis (2:22)
8. PoiL - Lo potz (1:12)
9. Rush - Madrigal (2:33)
10. Ruins - Gurthemvhail (2:50)

Total: 24:26

Side 3:
1. Magma - Rind-ë (3:07)
2. Electric Light Orchestra - First Movement (Jumpin' Biz) (2:58)
3. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Pegasus (1:48)
4. The Science Group - Niska Banja (2:15)
5. Eloy - The Zany Magician (2:38)
6. The Flower Kings - Poor Mr. Rain's Ordinary Guitar (2:44)
7. Spock's Beard - Freak Boy (2:12)
8. The Camberwell Now - Spirit of Dunkirk (2:39)
9. Tatsuya Yoshida & Haino Keiji - Ruhfjidfpokf (1:55)
10. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Traccia II (2:39)

Total: 24:55

Side 4:
1. Deadwood Forest - OCD (2:48)
2. FM - Hours (2:36)
3. Jeff Beck - Head for Backstage Pass (2:43)
4. Kansas - The Spider (2:08)
5. The Work - Flies (2:22)
6. East - A végtelen tér öröme (1:38)
7. Vangelis - Sword of Orion (2:05)
8. Magellan - The Winner (2:07)
9. Yes - Cinema (2:09)

^Fair enough, I like your thought process. I actually hadn't thought that deep into it so number of tracks wasn't in my mind. And yes there are plenty of excellent full side prog tunes but I was going for more of a prog mix tape LP idea as well as an LP that would be a good intro to prog for a newbie. I could have explained that better, or at all (my bad). Approve

Here's my Volume 1. Well you didn't think only one package would be enough did you? Wink

Side 1
ELP - The Barbarian (4:33)
Yes - Siberian Khatru (8:57)
Genesis - In The Cage (5:15)
(21:45)

Side 2
King Crimson - Red (6:17)
ELP - Karn Evil 9 (2nd Imp) (7:07)
Jethro Tull - Hymn 43 (3:18)
Steve Hackett - Ace Of Wands (5:23)
(22:05)

Side 3
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man (7:20)
Gentle Giant - Peel The Paint (7:25)
Peter Gabriel - I Go Swimming (Live) (5:05)
(19:50)

Side 4
ELP - Trilogy (8:54)
Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies (7:19)
Yes - Lightning Strikes (4:34)
(20:47)

It's Prog. So my double album would look a little like this:

Side One: Tarkus
Side Two: Close To The Edge
Side Three: A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers
Side Four: Supper's Ready
The Prog Corner

In the spirit of a "mix tape" and also more of an intro for a newbie, here are my choices (which, people may note, will also take the newbie listener on a chronological journey from 1968 to 1982!):

Side One:
Caravan: A Place of My Own
Jethro Tull: Living in the Past
ELP: Lucky Man
Yes: I've Seen All Good People
The Moody Blues: I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band

Side Two:
Renaissance: Can You Understand?
King Crimson: The Night Watch
Gentle Giant: On Reflection

Side Three:
Van Der Graaf Generator: Wondering
Genesis: Unquiet Slumber for the Sleepers....in that Quiet Earth/Afterglow
Camel: Breathless

Side Four:
Banco: Canto Di Primavera
Steve Hackett: The Steppes
Barclay James Harvest: In Memory of the Martyrs
Twelfth Night: Love Song
