I like PFM, because I love how lush sounding their compositions could sound. Dolcissima Maria is very soft sounding, Appena un Po with it's sound that makes me feel like I am on that land shown on the Per Un Amico cover, and La Corroza Di Hans with it's folky sounds in some parts while also having those cool rocking parts as well. It is too bad this band lost to a way inferior sounding metal band on Ultimate Guitar's list https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/articles/features/35_best_rock_bands_from_italy-63431. Just listen to that Lacuna Coil song after La Corroza Di Hans, and tell me that PFM is number one and not two. Anyways, I like Banco's keyboards, and also the singer, and I like Le Orme's spacey keyboard sounds, especially on Felona E Sorona. Area sounds like Frank Zappa and Soft Machine in my opinion. Area's first album makes me think of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew at moments as well. I was blown away by Zarathustra by Museo Rosenbach as well. What a masterpiece of a suite.
Vote for one of the 4 bands listed in the title listed, and also vote for one of the other bands listed if you like.

And for some reason, I feel like the Epilogo from the Ys album by Il Balletto di Bronzo is sort of like Lady Fantasy by Camel, because they both have these bookending riffs, but have these simple but interesting slow parts in there, and both have a part where the band rocks out at the end. And also that they both clock at over 10-minutes. I wish Camel had more of those songs that were that long. Ice, Lawrence, A Nod and a Wink, and For Today, but none of those are even as good as Lady Fantasy. Except for Ice.

Premiata Forneria Marconi. Apparently, one of their 80s albums is called Miss. Baker. The title track makes me think of Reggae and Men at Work when I hear it. It is not that good, but it is pretty catchy. Nowhere near as good as the classics.

This one is very tough, so I'll not vote. I don't have a clear favorite...

PFM. Just by a hair over Le Orme and Banco.

PFM. I love ALL of these bands. and have been coincidentally listening to them again lately (winter is all about Italian prog for me).
I might even actually prefer them in the order you've listed, OP.

Area has the largest quantity of albums and music I love (so I woted for them). But when I have a craving for some warm and nice prog, both early PFM and Le Orme are high up there - and I quite like the rest of the bands as well.

I voted Le Orme mainly because they made a very fine album late in their career Elementi . Their first 5 albums are excellent as well.
Banco's last album Transiberiana is also excellent so I could make similar comments about them. PFM - the first three are classics but then a lot of meh. My knowledge of RPI goes off a cliff after that although I did like a couple of albums from 2020 from Logos and Las Maschera Di Cera , couldn't tell you anything about the bands though!

I need to hear more of Area's discography. If it's all as great as Arbeit Macht Frei that may be my pick. But for now... Banco are fab but not really my favorites (though Darwin is a masterpiece). Le Orme are close to my heart but of the stuff I've heard from them that isn't Felona E Sorona is a bit inconsistent. Museo Rosenbach are great, but just great, not exceptional to me. Osanna needs more albums period. Ys as well. So that leads me to the pretty cliche choice of...
Premiata Formerai Marconi. Each of their first three albums is either a masterpiece or close to a masterpiece in its own way. My personal preference is Per Un Amico, which I wouldn't change a fraction of a second from. Storia is perfect for quite days spent reading. And L'Isola really leans into their weirder, more Banco-ish and fusion-inflected side in a joyous way (though Is My Face On Straight didn't need English lyrics in my opinion). Sure nothing else tops that initial run of three, but what a run it is!

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

It seems like Italian bands have a three album rule going for them.

PFM, Banco, and Le Orme are all phenomenal bands, and in terms of RPI, are among the most influential. But Area (equally as phenomenal, mind you) is probably one of the most unique, interesting, and adventurous 70s prog bands, in Italy and in general.
