I know. That's why I typed "Progressive/Symphonic Metal", to cove both base metals, so to speak.

Prog Metal rules and it's not only limited to "Dream Theater".

yes, but symphonic metal is not a progressive metal subgenre. The roots of symphonic metal were in European power metal and gothic metal.

my least liked sub-genre. I just can’t understand the appeal of anything metal. But go for it- I’ll just sit out the polls

Since I'm not really into prog metal and hardly know the bands and their music, I wouldn't know who to vote for, but I'm sure many prog metal fans would be delighted.

so here is a list of some bands mentioned in this thread, choosing the bands for the poll will be hard. For now I put a question mark if it's gonna make the list or not.
Dream Theater Opeth Fates Warning Psychotic Waltz Watchtower - very important for early progressive metal, but it's got only 2 albums and a couple of EPs; strong contender though. Royal Hunt - not that progressive IMO, metalstorm has them labelled as "symphonic power metal" which I agree Shadow Gallery Vanden Plas Symphony X Pain of Salvation Diablo Swing Orchestra - not my thing, also labelled as avant-garde metal and symphonic metal, maybe I need to give them a second chance. Leprous Mastodon - I've never liked them that much and I've tried, don't know if they make the poll. Myrath Planet X - maybe together with Derek's albums on his own, it's an idea Beyond Twilight Voyager Artension - maybe, not that known band I'm afraid Riverside Ayreon - I can't stand this band anymore, but will make the poll to please those who like Ayreon Queensrÿche Sieges Even Pagan's Mind Circus Maximus Darkwater Pantommind - rather unknown, but very good band. Redemption Deadsoul Tribe Arcturus - another band that I'll have to give a second chance Threshold Communic Pathosray - same situation as Pantommind Zero Hour Kamelot Therion Spheric Universe Experience Adagio Andromeda Tomorrow's Eve - little known band beyond metalheads and progressive metal fans Wolverine Evergrey Seventh Wonder Anubis Gate Conception Dreamscape Epysode - I remember being bored by this band, they also have two albums if i remember right. Green Carnation Headspace Ice Age Mind Key Orphaned Land - hit and miss with me, might make it because they're popular Pyramaze Suspyre Time Requiem - very show-ish neo-classical progressive metal, a chore to go through. To-Mera Vanishing Point - a band I gave up on, maybe needs a second chance, I don't know Death - important for tech/extreme progressive metal, might make the list Gorguts - I only like their debut album, important for technical death metal. Pestilence - not my thing, at least i know what they sound like. Atheist - another band I'll have to give another chance, hit and miss with me. Thanks for the bands suggested, it's gonna be hard to make a poll, plus i was thinking of bands that are not even in this big list. Edited by Cristi - February 02 2022 at 01:50 |

Ok, I will create the poll tomorrow, I will choose 25 bands and then albums from these bands, like I did with the neo-prog rounds.
If there are relevant bands missing from that big list (your suggestions so far), do post them, more than welcomed (what have we forgot?)
