Wow! This one is HARD!!!
I think there are only 3 or 4 I’m not familiar with, and there are probably 10-12 albums here that are very easily worthy of my vote. How to choose between them? 😱 |

The above post was made without counting. There are actually 5 I'm not familiar with, and 12 that I am still attempting to choose between for my vote. Nothing really stands out from this bunch, and I enjoy them all. It's polls like this where I wish multiple votes were allowed! I have to say, I do find Drew's polls a lot harder to choose from the options than Paul's for the same year - where usually I only like one or two (if any at all) of what he puts forward. |

I'm exactly the other way around Nick... I can often easily choose 10-12 of Paul's but usually only a couple of Drew's. I think that must put me in the 'light weight' category...

^ No, I wouldn't agree with that at all, even in jest. I don't agree with the snobbery that some prog is more "light weight" than others (or, for that matter, that anything that is not prog is "light weight" than anything that is), and think this is one of the greatest barriers of prog getting to a greater audience. Even though I recognise the inoffensive intentions of joking about the snobbery, such jesting doesn't really help in breaking down the barriers, so much as maintaining them. We could do with less barriers in this world, in my opinion. Every one has different tastes, and I don't believe any are more or less "light weight" than others, so much as different.

Well, all I will say is that there has always been this pervading undercurrent that if you listen to Magma, you have finer progressive sensibilities than if you listen to Mostly Autumn.
Being as I have always liked my 'prog' (and some people will even deny it IS prog) to be at the lighter, more accessible and melodic end of the spectrum, I have accordingly styled myself as a lightweight in such a self-deprecatory manner.

Precisely why I post the second "alternate" list after Paul. There seem to be (at least) two (and probably more: the old classicists used to be very strong here--and very opinionated) groups at play here: the majority of the currently active PA socialites seem to favor the "lighter" more Neo-Prog side of modern music while a still strong minority love the boundary-pushing avant/jazz/angular/fringe prog that bands like King Crimson, The Soft Machine, Comus, Henry Cow, Magma, UZed, Art Zoyd and others pioneered. IT'S ALL GOOD! WE ARE ALL HERE TO CELEBRATE OUR LOVE FOR MUSIC! |

Your lists and the work you put in to compiling them are very much appreciated, Drew, as you help add interest to the forums and keep them alive. I always find *something* to vote for in your lists, even though it may only be one or two. Having been around on and off (mainly off, admittedly) since 2005, I understand your point about the 'old classicists' very well, however I think the pendulum on the balance of tastes here has moved back into the middle between the lighter and the more A-G, with fewer camps and divisions than there used to be. I think I'll always be at the lighter end of the spectrum; every now and then I try a bit more 'Henry Cow' or whatever and it frightens me to death! To give you an idea, f the 'old classics' besides Rush, Yes, Genesis & Floyd, I've recently been enjoying some Camel, Barclay James Harvest, Eloy, Renaissance, (early) Hawkwind & Mike Oldfield, which I've really liked all my life...

Agreed with regard to the "fewer camps" statement. I was just thinking how things have become really quite "civil" around here of late. It's rather nice--though I do miss the prominence of more lovers of the angular/experimental/avant garde side of prog.
