Topic: The Most Psychedelic Music Ever? Posted: October 21 2005 at 12:42 |
Me and my mate were just wondering the other day that it would be great to hear the most psychedelic music ever.
We don't want your typical psych band, just something extremely senseless, absurd, mind-bending and shamelessly painful.
Does anyone know any suggestions?

"Shamelessly painful" <---What does that mean?
|
"The red polygon's only desire / is to get to the blue triangle."

Hapshash and His Technicolour Coat, first album fulfiils several of your needs if not all - I think Repertoise Records issued it on CD (but don't get their second album Western Flyer - it is a significantly better album). The first album has largely non-professional musicians playing (although Groundhogs guitarist Tony McPhee is aledgedly playing bongos!)

The name of the band is "Hapshash and the Coloured Coat" (no "Techni"
in there"). The album is "Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal
Kids".
I'd also mention Brainticket's "Cottonwoodhill" and Amon Düül's "Psychedelic Underground", the first Krautrock album ever.

This one definitely fits the "painful" criteria...

BF thanks for the correction. I did a Goggle websearch not remembering
the precise spelling or album name (but odd the 2nd one stuck though)
and it corrected my input of "Haphash and the Technicolour Coat"
with 'do you mean' to what I wrote..................

Yep!
Try ZAPPA's "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" or SÄHKÖ KVARTETTI's "Kaukana Väijyy Ystäviä" (M.A.Numminen).

Brainticket's "Cottonwood Hill" is DEFINITELY up there with the most psychedelic recordings of all time. Check out the track on the site and see what i mean.

Some old psych was done by the Velvet Underground, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Bubble Puppy, Fugs.
Fugs are painful, but catchy as well. If you can find the song 'Wide River' give it a listen.
Some of Rundgren's stuff could be considered psych.

Two heads are better than one, but if you want something done right, do it yourself. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but better safe than sorry. Look before you leap, but he who hesitates is lost

PAT METHENY's "The Sign of Four" is also painful.

Trout Mask Replica is kind of painful...

nothing from the bands mentionned above, the most psychedelic music comes from outside of rock music despite that the term was born in this popular genre

nothing can equalize ethnic, shamanistic music (from Nepal, Siberia…) in term of “psych” effects on mind! From “intellectual”, “conceptual” music I highly recommend the albums of Henry Jacobs & Flynt: an incredible "physical" experience. For the rock sound, Olivier brought interesting references.

I must reinforce everyone's opinion of Brainticket's Cottonwoodhill and also throw in Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come's Journey

Maybe the eponymous album by The United States Of America, from 1968 (they only released one album).

Brainticket's Cottonwoodhill : it isn't their best, there's no direction on this one! I consider that celestial ocean is better. More achieved than the two previous.
