They will find a way to remain popular and to continue to make a lot of money. The exit of their singer was well planned, they released a Greatest Hits album simultaneously.

But I'm sure that the departure of their singer and the plans to release the album were coordinated ... it's a merchandising thing. What was simultaneous was my reading the review of their Best Of album in the Rock Hard magazine, and the thread about Tarja's departure.

She became too big for her boots and controlling! Much like Fripp did with King Crimson, only difference Fripp sacked the band before they could sack him! Which was a shame really! |

I don't think their music will change too much. Tarja had nothing to do with writing any material. Toumas wrote everything and Tarja sung what she was told to sing. The fact that they may not get another opera voice may change the writing output a little, but considering it will be the same guy writing the stuff i wouldn't think it would change too much. They might release an album or two, but they'll fade into obscurity sooner or later.

Ha, never thought I would care sharing facts about Nightwish (not my cup of tea). But I was interested to find out the reasons. Tarja's sacking was a solution of a very long ill situation. I copied extracts of the open letter (by the band leader Tuomas Holopainen) from their homepage www.nightwish.com: To you [Tarja], unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with those emotions have become much more important. You feel that you have sacrificed yourself and your musical career for Nightwish, rather than thinking what it has given to you. You have said yourself that you are merely a ”guest musician” in Nightwish. Now that visit ends and we will continue Nightwish with a new female vocalist. We`re sure this is an equally big relief to you as it is for us. We have all been feeling bad long enough. You told us that no matter what, the next Nightwish album will be your last one. However, the rest of us want to continue as long as the fire burns. So there`s no sense in doing that next album with you, either. In interviews I`ve mentioned that if Tarja leaves, that would be the end of the band. I understand that people will think this way. Nightwish is, however, a scenery of my soul and I`m not ready to let go because of one person. A person who wants to focus her creativity to somewhere else, a person whose values don`t match mine. We were never bothered by the fact that you didn`t participate in writing/arranging songs, you never in 9 years came to rehearse the songs with us before going to the studio. Not the fact that while on tour you always wanted to fly, separately from us with your husband. Not the fact that you are an undisputable front image of the band. |

For me, Tarja's voice was what set Nightwish apart from all the other metal bands around. Take her voice away, and musically they sound pretty much like any other prog/power metal band - it's done well, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. So what happens to Nightwish depends on who replaces her. I'm not sure how true this is, but I heard that she was planning to leave the band anyway - by firing her, it meant that the band got in first. |

I believe they are going to look for a similar type female singer.
Which they will have propably no trouble finding. I'm sure there a lot
of volunteers ready already. They will try to continue with the same
musical direction.
However, some fans approval may be hard to get. I know a lot of fans are very upset. So their popularity may decrease some. I really like Nightwish. They're not my favourite prog metal band, but still they are very good. I hope it works out with the new singer. Tarja will propably continue with classical music, since it seems to be closest to her heart. I wish her luck with that (though she propably doesn't need that ). |

The thought of having such a singer in a power/symphonic metal band was
the thing that set them apart from others. Frankly I don't think it's going to be THAT hard to find a similar voice. |

Maybe not, although I don't think trained female singers who are willing to sing for a metal band are that easy to come by. |
