Topic: Question on Close to the Edge... Posted: November 08 2005 at 17:58 |
Last night I came across a CD reissue of Close to the Edge, re-mastered, no plastic case, all foldable cardstock, full liner notes and artwork... and only 7 bucks, I was happy. I've enjoyed this album for years but never actually owned the CD. I noticed something on the back that will drive me insane until I get an answer. It lists the five band members, and surrounds this listing by their pictures... except there are six pictures and five members... who's the other guy? I can identify all of them except the guy in the top right corner... is this the producer? Production credits identify Yes and Eddie Offord, is this Eddie?

That's Eddie, man, and the only picture of him taken during his life. The cigarettes claimed his life, and he was buried in a green coffin in Close to the Edge Cemetary (North Wales, UK).

Eddie was practically the sixth member of the band, and Yes acknowledged this by including a picture of him, and giving him equal status in that regard.
The stories behind Close to the Edge are legendary. Eddie spending countless hours with strips of master tape of various lengths stuck to the walls, how he pieced them together to "arrange" the songs, and how the band actually had to listen to the final mixes so they could learn the songs, because what went on the record wasn't always what they'd rehearsed or recorded, at least not in the same order.

Does anyone else out there think it's a little ironic that Bill is the only one smiling in those pictures and he left before the tour even got underway? That always amused me.
...I mean Steve just looks ridiculously bored.

I didn't know he died. When did that happen? I was wondering why I didn't see any of his producing credits anymore on newer albums.

...I mean Steve just looks ridiculously bored. | Haha yeah that's kinda ironic on Bill. As for Steve, I never thought he looked bored in that pic, just ridiculously stoned (as does Chris).

I know he did some early ELP albums and some albums by David Sancious...
I didn't know he was dead BTW.

Didn't know this! I have seen other pictures of Eddie Offord,
there's one in the liner notes of the Rhino remaster of Tales from
Topographic Oceans, he has a cigarette in his hand.....and Eddie did a
lot of work for ELP as well.

They used him from The Yes Album until Relayer. After that the band
took a break and when they came back, for whatever reason, they didn't
use Eddie anymore. Much as I like Going for the One - the first studio
album after Relayer - it doesn't have the same quality of production as
when Eddie was on board.
And I didn't know he was dead, but I guessed either that or he was a
recluse as there were never any interviews with him or news about
him.....

In The january 2005 edition of "Notes From the Edge" it states that - "Eddie Offord is currently producing the third album for MEDICINE with MEDICINE leader Brad Laner here in Los Angeles." So unless he died this year he is alive and well and still working.

There's another picture of Eddie Offord at the YesYears (box set) booklet, placed at the back of Pete Frame's Yes Family Tree.
