Topic: I hate prog rock Posted: November 10 2005 at 17:22 |
Just kidding. This has become one of my new favorite sites. I've
already written a couple of reviews, actually, on THE MARS VOLTA, my
favorite band from this decade. But don't worry, my musical tastes are
more diverse than that.
My introduction to prog music started with TOOL and the album Lateralus. My interest in prog has since diversified. I started becoming interested in BRIAN ENO and his album Here Come the Warm Jets when I heard some of his music on an Italian film (I can't remember the name, but it was a decent movie). Along with Here Come the Warm Jets, I also got Thick as a Brick
by our favorite JETHRO TULL. Since then, I found myself interested in
bands such as DREAM THEATER and LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT - hitting it
off with Train of Thought and Liquid Tension Experiment 1. During that time period, I became interested in the later work of THE BEATLES such as The White Album and Abbey Road, and also RADIOHEAD's Kid A and OK Computer.
Meanwhile, I started getting interested in the genre of Post Rock since
a lot of my friends were excited about it, and I started listening to
GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR and A SILVER MOUNT ZION.
Now, I know a lot of you proggers will think that this is absent of a
lot of older stuff (excluding BRIAN ENO, JETHRO TULL, and THE BEATLES)
which was true until very recently. I wound up finding ProgArchives and
started browsing - since then I've picked up a whole bunch of KING
CRIMSON, GENESIS, YES, MAGMA, HATFIELD AND THE NORTH, CARAVAN, RUSH,
and JEAN-MICHEL JARRE.
Which of course, I absolutely love these days (especially HATFIELD AND THE NORTH's The Rotters Club and Fragile by YES) and I think I'll appreciate for the rest of my life.
Oh, I figure I had better mention some non-prog bands I enjoy for the sake of our audience.
IRON MAIDEN and SYSTEM OF A DOWN are up there (IRON MAIDEN because it
seems to me like the start of the prog metal genre and SOAD for their
interesting experimental work). I've also been getting into FISHBONE,
JAGGA JAZZIST, DEPECHE MODE, NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, INFECTED MUSHROOM, and
MODEST MOUSE (their older stuff, of course).
Oh, and of course, I forgot to mention the beautiful SLEEPYTIME GORILLA
MUSEUM and MR. BUNGLE. SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM has been spending a
lot of time in my Ipod lately.
Well, that's me.
I also like to write prog music... I might post a link someday for you guys to enjoy.
Keep Proggin'

I'm a bit disappointed! It would have been so interesting for a change to read why someone hates prog rock. Anyway, since you're also a converted true believer, welcome to the machine!

No really, you like TMV also? I've been noticing that a lot of diehard prog fans on this site don't really like them.
Oh, and I want to thank all of you who have been so nice in welcoming me - this site looks kick-arse already.

Welcome to the site! Yeah, I love this place too. Even
though I don't post too often, I always visit the main site for some
new bands to check out.
I'm not really an Indie fan by any means, but NMH are great.
You seem to have a pretty wide spread taste in music. I don't
think I've ever seen somebody like both Progressive Rock and, say,
System of a Down. =P

TMV are one of those love/hate bands here. some hate them because
they aren't Yes. others hate them because theyre too
popular. others love them because they know they are a great
band.
also, while we may be musical elitists here, we are definitely not
1337. we speak english (for the most part... we are a
worldwide group). but, oh what's the harm in letting loose just
once? prog rox0rz teh sox0rz!!!11
ok im done. enjoy the music, dude.

Yeah, I can speak normal English. I was just having some fun.
And I sure am enjoying the music... I listened to both Fragile and The Rotters Club today. Great stuff. Superb.

I like SOAD too. I mean, there are a lot of really tasty licks
here and there, and I feel like they actually know how to write music
(unlike some mainstream bands) >.>

How awesome. A place where I can talk about progressive rock and not hear "IS THIS ONE OF YOUR 50 HOUR LONG SONGS?!?!" I salute you. :D

Wow, it's been a while since I've read this thread, but it's so nice to see how many people are welcoming!
I recently bought Dark Matter by IQ and that's quite an album, let me tell ya, though nowhere near some other prog.
