 Topic: Greatest American Rock Band

This is a toughie, and something I often puzzle over. So many great bands were British, and this REALLY highlights that.
But I say Byrds, REM, or Ramones. The Byrds invented practically EVERYTHING: folk-rock, jangle-rock, psychedelia, space-rock, country-rock, California-rock. Their sound was practically untouchable, too. I would call them the American Beatles. R.E.M. took leaves from the Byrds book and made them cryptic and intelligent, pretty much inventing alternative rock, a far-reaching and dominating genre. They might be the American Smiths. Finally, the Ramones took power-pop and glam-rock to its logical conclusion, inventing punk-rock and really touching the soul of rock 'n roll. (Nowhere near as stupid as some of the punk bands who followed, either.)
Any thoughts on the matter? I hope so.

Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, CCR, Allman Brothers, CSN&Y, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Steely Dan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top are some pretty decent acts to consider!

There are lots to consider ... although in my book there's roughly 3 great British bands for each American one ...
The Byrds are actually my favourite at the moment too ... CSNY, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Spirit, The Doors, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Vanilla Fudge, Grateful Dead ... there are lots of fantastic ones just from the late 60s alone ...
I'm at the stage where I don't really check out Skynrd, Allmans, Doobie Brothers, Little Feat too often but they all rock too ...

What about Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, early Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper but of course the amazing Santana (Not talking about Carlos because he was born in Jalisco - Mexico, but about the band formed by him in San Francisco).
Just to add some more to the previously mentioned.

60's - The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Beachboys
70's - Aerosmith, Alice Cooper,
80's - REM, They Might be Giants, The Pixies, Talking Heads
90's - REM, Pearl Jam

I think all the better US non-prog bands have been mentioned but I will put a special mention on Jefferson Airplane

That's the question, Sean.
CSN&Y is 25% English and 25% Canadian but since they lined-up in USA we may consider them an American band. Same with Talking Heads with British people originally. I don't know if it is the case of Steppenwolf.

My vote would be for Buffalo Springfield. Their Again album is so good and has so many influences.

I thought the record states that REM are influenced by Big Star (who evolved out of the Box Tops) and the Trogs...........................

Big Star had little to do with the Box Tops, Alex Chilton notwithstanding. They sounded more like the Byrds than anything else. The "Troggs" thing is kind of a joke, I think. Pointing to the "garage" quality of their recording.
