Being interested in electronical music I found some music on the Internet from The White Noise, called An Electric Storm. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/2554/whitenoise.h tml
I found some 'songs' on the internet and was just wondering why the white noise is not listed in the prog archives? I consider it to be very early prog (sixties) but maybe there is a reason to think otherwise. |

I'd have said it was more electronic avant / psych, but it has plenty of
progressive overtones and is certainly a marginal case for inclusion. |

Non-synth based electronica made in the middle/late 60's (e.g. relied heavily of tape splicing, loop, backward play, speed up and down play etc. etc), by people who in part apparently went on to form the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop - e.g. creators of the Dr Who music. Terry Riley, Milton Subotnik, Stockhausen, etc. (even George Martin with a few members of the Beatles for Revolution No 9), experimented with recorded sound this way - a movement that dated back to the early 40's. The great, late Kenny Everett plundered the first White Noise album for his jingles and other sound effects. White Noise 2 was made quite some time later (by whom? - the guy who didn't join the Radiophonic Workshop), and there may even be a third album??????? In part White Noise and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop were offering and employed, as an alternative way of making sound to the likes of the Paris-based Lasry-Bashettes Les Structures Sonore (sp), commonly used for TV background music which sounded very unusual in the early 60's - however, Les Structures Sonore were using novel instruments played in real time - strings which were hit and percussive instruments which were bowed or plucked! Told earlier this year, at a meeting of scientists and musicians at the Open University, that Lasry Bashette are still playing, but by the sons and daughters of the original band. |

David Vorhaus is the leader of the band, he (alone, I think) made WN 2, which was released in 1974. It can be classified as electronic prog (it's actually a symphony for synthesizer). There are at least five WN albums (I have only heard #2) http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/david_vorhaus_and_white_nois e |

I've listen to White noise one time and be quite disapointed. I read a critic before, comparing it to Ummagumma and Mike Oldfield. Tiny connexion.

Kenny Everett plundered this track for a number of his radio jingles! Edited by Dick Heath |
