Topic: System of a Down - Hypnotize Posted: November 15 2005 at 21:36 |
http://www.mtv2.com/#leak/system_of_a_down
Since this band doesn't get too much attention on this forum, I decided
to take the liberty to post the entire leak of System of a Down's new
album Hypnotize. I can honestly say, that this is some fantastic,
heavy progressive music! A loose discription would be punk/trash
mixed with Zappa/Patton, with a Middle Eastern touch. Their last
cd Mezmerize (the sister cd to Hypnotize), made its debut at # 1 on the
American Billboard charts it's first week, and I'm glad people are
indulging in more artistic musical tastes (as apposed to say, 50 Cent.)
So please, take a listen...SOAD doesn't fail to please and/or
intrigue. Personally, i think they should be added to the
archives (Prog-Related, perhaps?) But if they weren't, I
wouldn't be heart broken. They are still a terrific band! Enjoy

Man, I love SOAD! Their latest album really is their first prog
related album, and my favorite. I agree that they are prog
related, but I don't think they'll ever be on this site, since Muse
isn't even on here.

SOAD's okay, I used to like 'em a lot, afore I discovered in my dad's CD collection a little album called "2112". But they're alright, I still haven't heard anything off of the new albums except for 'Question?' (pretty good) and 'B.Y.O.B.' (okay). I've gotta get my guitarist to lend me his copy...

I don't like System of a down.
Besides they are not progressive, so they shouldn't be mentioned at this site.

They make songs with 1 or 2 melodies. Just clever songs and highly professional production and marketing.

I used to really enjoy SOAD a lot. Mostly because they were my cousin's favorite band and he turned them on to me. But now, I don't care for them that much anymore, and I think it's because their bass player. Hypnotize could be a great album in my mind, but I think their bass player is too involved with the vocals. His voice is nowhere near the level of Serg's.

"Toxicity" is the best thing SOAD have done to date. If "Hypnotize" is anything like "Mesmerize", it'll be more of the same - and it's nowhere near Zappa standards!
SAOD are great fun, and "Toxicity" especially showed a lot of proggy promise - but they haven't lived up to it, IMO - the roots of the music are street level garage band just making the music they like, with no pretensions to high art whatsoever.
Not even prog related, IMO.

It's their GUITARIST,Daron Malakian, who sings all the backgrounds and harmonies(and some lead, sometimes)vocals. He also writes pretty much all the music.

Woops, I mean Daron their guitarist. He is the one who sings a lot (and sucks).

I like that they are experimenting more with sounds and vocal
harmonies. Mesmerize was a really intriguing album and I like it
a lot, and I thought it really blew Toxicity out of the water.
However, it still doesn't hold a candle to their self titled
debut.
Now I cant decide if I want to follow your link or wait until tuesday to hear it!

OK, so I got the album.... and I must say I'm impressed. I cant
decide which half (mesmerize or hypnotize) I like better at this
point. They do a lot of strong melodies (and amazing harmonies)
and mix it all in with their signature craziness.
Any fan of Fantomas needs to check out the track "Vicinity of Obscenity".

I got the Dualdisc version of the album today, haven't seen the DVD yet, but I've listened to the album 3 times already. f**king brilliant, EASILY better than Mezmerize, and pretty much better than all other albums this year put together.
