Lars-Olof's corrections have now been added in to the original text.

The Roots Of Echo's story goes like this (taken from their old website http://home.wish.net/~antlady/troe.html via the Wayback Machine, with amendments and updates kindly provided by founding member Lars-Olof Ström):

The Roots of Echo were:

Lars-Olof Ström - Vocals
Sven Lorentzon - Guitar
Mats Segerdahl - Drums
Andreas Niemi - Bass
Jörgen Oscarsson - Keyboards

"The Roots of Echo" was started by Sven Lorentzon & Lars-Olof Ström, April 1990, in Gothenburg - Sweden, originally just known as 'Roots'. They changed the name to "The Roots Of Echo" in the summer of 1990. In 1991 they recorded their first songs on an 4-channel porta-studio with the help from some friends. In 1992 they recorded some songs from a live gig they did. The song "The Garden" was recorded and later released (1993) on a collection-CD called "Life's A Joke", with Swedish psychedelic and Indie bands, released by "101", a small fanzine.

The album "The Roots of Echo" was recorded January 1993 and released at the summer the same year. This album was put together at "MVR-studio" in Fjärsås, (a very old and dusty 8-channel studio) and received great response from magazines in Italy, Belgium, U.K. and The Netherlands.

"Let your freak flag fly" was another collection-CD The Roots of Echo were on, with "Answer".
Garageland Records liked the band's music so much that they decided to finance The Roots of Echo's second album; "Söabu". This album was recorded in spring 1994, and had a more folk music attitude than the first album. "Söabu" was released in February 1995.

All this time they had taken help from a bunch of musical friends (including "Sinkadus" who had helped them at recordings and live gigs)

1994 - Played live at Gothenburg Art-Rock Festival (G.A.R.F.) together with Sinkadus. In the summer of 1994 Mats Svensson (who is now also with Sinkadus, & later changed his name to Segerdahl), who had earlier helped the band at live gigs, joined the band.

In autumn 1994 Andreas Niemi joined the band. Andreas had at that time recently broken up his heavy metal band "Akilles" to hang the bass on the wall, but Sven & L-O phoned him and after they heard him play they asked him to become a member of the band. Shortly after that they changed their rehearsal-local from the ceiling-room at Sven's home deep in a forest to a larger place that was a bit closer to Gothenburg.

The Roots of Echo had now developed an very original psychedelic sound, with a lot of guitar solos and a pounding rhythm section. In April 1995 they went back to the "MVR-studio" to record "Total live ninety-five", a raw three track cassette including the new songs "As time goes by" and "Guilt" and a new version on "Catch this moment". In May the same year Jörgen Oscarsson did the keyboard work for the cassette.

In May 1995 the band played live with Sinkadus again, but this time as two separate bands. Sinkadus took notice of The Roots of Echo's new drummer Mats and they later asked him for his help. Jörgen Oscarsson joined as keyboard player in the band later that spring. After contact from Phil McMullen they released "As time goes by" as a EP for Phil's "The Ptolemaic Terrascope" in U.K. September 1995. Over 8000 copies were made and sold on three weeks. This EP is completely sold out.

"Nothing Between You and the Sun" was recorded spring 1996 at "MVR" and because the band was short on money, most of the songs were recorded in one take and with a lot of improvisation. The album was released by the Italian company Mellow Records in May 1997, and is considered by many as The Roots of Echo's most progressive and powerful record ever.

April 97 - The Roots of Echo did a live gig for "G.A.R.F." again, at Dojan, Gothenburg.

1998 - Due to Lars-Olof's health problems at the time, Mats' heavy involvement with Sinkadus, and Andreas' and Jörgen's own projects, "The Roots of Echo" was dissolved.

The group re-formed in 2012 as a project in order to manage the group's heritage and aiming at some future plans of the resumption of business, initially as a collaboration between Sven and Lars-Olof, then as a non-profit project run by Lars-Olof on his own.

(Collection of various artists which we contribute the song "Answers"): http://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/various_artists_f2/let_your_freak_flag_fly/

I'll let the final editing be done by someone who is familiar with the proper format of biography entries on PA. The source of the info is given at the top of the post - or you can just credit it directly to Lars-Olof, since he has kindly provided all the corrections.

^ Thanks, I've managed this. But without links to RYM (links don't work well on artists' pages). We can use these links for updating the band's discography on PA.

It would be also helpful to have a link to the band's website.

Hi all and thank you very much.

Just one more thing that I noticed now in the beginning of the text - it says "Initially THE ROOTS OF ECHO were". That is incorrect. Doesn't "initially" mean "from the beginning"?

As it says in the text it was me (Lars-Olof Ström) and Sven Lorentzon who started the band. The mentioned line up was the last one before we dissolved. The thing is that before that we consisted of myself and Sven with different musicians we borrowed in for different projects over the years, meaning the only real band line up was the mentioned five members line up.

My suggestion therefore is to change that sentence to:
"The last line up before dissolving was", or something that fits this sites standards when a band has had different line ups.

Alternatively, it could be changed into just me and Sven, it depends on how you usually write line ups in cases like this. If so, I did more then sing and Sven played more then just guitar.

Regarding our website, please see this topic:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=99968

Regards, L-O Ström

^ It was my mistake to add the word "initially".

What else could I think reading these lines:
"The Roots of Echo were:

Lars-Olof Ström - Vocals
Sven Lorentzon - Guitar
Mats Segerdahl - Drums
Andreas Niemi - Bass
Jörgen Oscarsson - Keyboards

"The Roots of Echo" was started by Sven Lorentzon & Lars-Olof Ström, April 1990, in Gothenburg - Sweden, originally just known as 'Roots'. They changed the name to "The Roots Of Echo" in the summer of 1990..."?

Though that's not the point. I've deleted the first lines and started the bio with "THE ROOTS OF ECHO was started by Sven Lorentzon & Lars-Olof Ström, April 1990, in Gothenburg - Sweden...".

If you prefer I can add this info closer to the end:
"1998 - Due to Lars-Olof's health problems at the time, Mats' heavy involvement with SINKADUS, and Andreas' and Jörgen's own projects, THE ROOTS OF ECHO was dissolved.
The last line up before dissolving was:
Lars-Olof Ström - vocals
Sven Lorentzon - guitar

Andreas Niemi - bass
Jörgen Oscarsson - keyboards

The group re-formed in 2012 as a project in order to manage the group's heritage and aiming at some future plans of the resumption of business, initially as a collaboration between Sven and Lars-Olof, then as a non-profit project run by Lars-Olof on his own."

And thanks, I've added the facebok page. By the way, usually people give direct links to their websites instead of the link to the thread where you can find requested link. Wink

There are also questions to albums info.

1. Catch This Moment (4:33)
2. Too Close To Come Near (3:35)
3. The Easy Way To Go (6:12)
4. The Dream (5:52)
5. Let Love Flow Over (3:01)
6. Another Goddamned War (6:33)
7. Reality And Dreams (5:26)
8. Looking Deeper (3:20)

10. Roots Of Echo (2:53)
11. Soon After Dark (3:03)
12. Somewhere In This World (7:29)

Does the album contain this track?

The line-up info now:
- Lars-Olof Ström / vocals
- Sven Lorentzon / guitar
- Lisbeth Ingvarsson / bass
- Erik Kullgren /
- Mia Lorentzon /
- Karolina Wikander /
Is it posible to complete it?

The line-up info is a bit confusing:
- Sven Lorentzon / acoustic & electric guitar, bass, tamburine
- L. O. Ström / vocals, keyboards, drums, tamburine, xylofon, percussion
- Lars / drums
- Lisbeth Ingvarsson / bass
- Mia Lorentzon / recorder

Hi!

I'd prefer that you add it in the end and that you write it like you suggested, please.
While at it, please change it to the following:
Lars-Olof Ström - Vocals, Keyboards
Sven Lorentzon - Guitars
Mats Segerdahl - Drums
Andreas Niemi - Bass
Jörgen Oscarsson - Keyboards

The reason I gave the link to the thread was to show how the conversation started, including some useful information about the work with the biography - here's also the link to our new home page, which also could be found there, just a click away:

- Stefan / bass
Is it correct?

Regarding "The Roots Of Echo":
1, Yes, it does - but it should say 13. [hidden track] (2:56), instead.
2, Yes, please change the line up into this:
- Lars-Olof Ström / vocals, keyboards, tambourine, xylophone, sound effects
- Sven Lorentzon / electric and acoustic guitar, bass, drums, banjo
- Lisbeth Ingvarsson / bass
- Pelle Andersson / drums
- Erik Kullgren / clarinet
- Mia Lorentzon / recorder
- Karolina Wikander / violin

Regarding "Söabu":
Not really, there's some misprints and missing facts in the booklet, so please correct it into the following:
- Lars-Olof Ström / vocals, keyboards, tambourine, xylophone, sound effects, percussion
- Sven Lorentzon / electric and acoustic guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, mandolin
- Lisbeth Ingvarsson / bass
- Pelle Andersson / drums
- Robert Sjöback / bass
- Fredrik Karlsson / keyboards
- Rickard Biström / drums
- Linda Ågren / background vocals
- Jonas Kernell / keyboards
- Stefan Nilsson / bass
- Lars Malmros / drums
- Mia Lorentzon / recorder
- Björn Johansson / bassoon, tin whistle
- Leif ? / violin

Regretfully, no one remembers the last name of this Leif who played violin on one track and for some reason we only wrote the first names of our collaborating musicians in the booklet, so his first name has to do, I'm afraid.

Finally, would you also please change the line up on our third CD "Nothing Between You And The Sun" (http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=10533) to:
- Lars-Olof Ström / vocals, keyboards, sound effects
- Sven Lorentzon / electric and acoustic guitar
- Andreas Niemi / bass
- Jörgen Oscarsson / keyboards
- Mats Svensson / drums

I think that is all :)

Best regards, Lars-Olof Ström

Note:
The above mentioned source website: http://home.wish.net/~antlady/troe.html was administrated for several years by bassist Andreas Neimi but was taken down a while back, that's why the link no longer works - just if some one wonders.

^ Let's change the line to "Taken from Andreas Neimi's website (THE ROOTS OF ECHO's bass guitarist)" or something like this. OK?

Many thanks, L-O, the albums' info updated.

No need to change that, IMO - I just wrote that as an internal info.
