Topic: Alan Morse got an awfull guitar sound! Posted: December 06 2005 at 04:01 |
Ah i love Spocks beard but i think really Alan Morse needs a quick course on how a properly distorted guitar should sound
He sounds awfull on the light and on the live performances and its quite dreadful that his guitar tone ruins the whole thing when everyone else got perfect tone

I absolutely disagree with you young man, I think his guitar sound is fantastic and more importantly...original. Would you want everyone to sound the same?

Have you heard his distorted sound live!?? Its truly awfull He ruins the whole "dont try this at home" concert for me.
And certainly what is the point of being original if it does sound really crappy

I can see your point. The guy uses so much feedback that he only has to give his guitar a mean look for it to start producing some hellish screams. But instead he keeps torturing the strings with all of his sweaty corrosive fingernails(!). I believe the real difficulty of playing his way is getting the guitar silent when it should be.
On the other hand... I do like some of that. At least he's one of the few guitarists with a recognizable sound. In fact, when he uses a more "normal" sound he sounds almost... erm... normal. And we can't have that in prog.

I have never heard any aweful distorted guitar sound on any 'Spock Beard' recording. I've seen the Beard in concert and his playing is melodic sounding and beautiful. If you want to hear some truly aweful guitar sounds that sound as if the guitar hasn't even been tuned, you should listen some Robert Fripp recordings!

Both use fender strats, both are a bit funky blues hard rock guitarists...and it might be that Mr Morse is using his fingers instead of a Pick, if you do that with distortions it often comes out quite unclear and sound a bit muffeled...that is why most guitarists that play with distortion use picks

Well i think he sounds good enough on stuff like V and Snow but forexample the light sounds quite bad...but that might be that the whole production is quite bad.
Anyways King Crimson-red is too and awfully sounding distortion but i thought that was just a poor recording

Well i think Mr.Morse would have been better off with fingerplaying the clean parts and using a pick on the heavier pieces
