I have freedom of choice and think most of that album is killer stuff, especially the 2nd half. Anyone else into them?

I don't really care to be honest, consider them what you like! Fact is, they're not in the Archives, so this is the wrong zone.

progressive, but not prog rock.

anyway, check them out, all of you. a VISIONARY
band – way ahead of their time.

thanks for namechecking them!
progressive rock and rural tranquility don't match. true or false?

The Prog Music lounge is only for bands who are actually listed in the archives though.

Devo made it cool to be a nerd back in the 80's.

I saw Devo's first UK concert at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, and I was knocked out by them. The first couple of singles were pretty good, but I wasn't so impressed by their debut album. I don't really know any of their later stuff, but they definitely had some good ideas. I always preferred Pere Ubu.

Either:

a) all popular music is prog, OR

b) you have to tighten up you definitions.

Devo produced some interesting music, but none of which struck me as prog.

Yah i always say Devo as a more accesible version of Pere Ubu

I love their first album to death, and they were truly ahead of their time. After that, though, when keyboards took the place of thier twisted idea of guitars, the music didn't seem as interesting to me. Still love Are We Not Men, though!

Gates of Steel, Whip It, Mongoloid, and Mexican Radio (I still kind of like that one) were pretty good, in their time.  They didn't age very well though, any more than the old Holly & the Italians or Pearl Harbour albums I once thought were way ahead of their time too.

Devo got a double share of their 15 minutes thanks largely to 1) MTV, 2) Movie & TV soundtracks, and 3) cover tunes.  By the time they did Shout, they were pretty much out of steam and I exercised my freedom of choice and quit listening.  Interesting band (for a while), but no more prog (IMHO) than The Waitresses or Trio were.
