I was just wondering if anyone (but me) loved video game music. There is a lot of great music composers out there who are working for video games company.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

Sure. Video game was a huge part of my childhood until today.

Besides, some of them compose legitimate progressive rock.

I am in love with video game music...specifically RPG music. Games I can think of off of the top of my head that have astounding music:

1. Halo/Halo 2

2. Fable

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

4. Mercenaries

5. Indigo Prophecy

6. Breakdown

7. Lord of the Rings Games (due to the amazing movie music)

8. Knights of teh Old Republic I + II

9. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escpae from Butcher Bay

10. ...that's all I can think of right now in terms of symphonic proportions.

I'm a reasonable man, get off my case

I noticed that, too. It definitely made the experience more enjoyable for me.

Steve Vai's interpretation of the main theme was pretty cool, too.

And to answer the original post: yes, I love video game music. Has anybody heard the Hyrule Symphony? They're an orchestra that plays music from the Zelda games... really calming stuff .

Well, this may not be so prog (more of metal actually) but I do like the Guilty Gear XX reload soundtrack.  Among fighting games, this soundtrack would be the most interesting.  Also, I'd agree that the Legend of Zelda series and Final Fantasy series soundtracks are pretty interesting too.

I like the Guilty Gear XX reload soundtrack too.  I also agree that The Legend of Zelda series is good; as a matter of fact, it's nice to note that you can make your own melody at one particular portion in "The Ocarina of Time" that you have to memorize to complete the game.

To say that I am huge into video game music would be an understatement.

I grew up as a child of the NES, and I think a lot of the music on that system remains among the best video game soundtracks of all time. My all time favorite would probably be Mega Man 2, followed closely by Contra, Metroid, Castlevania, and The Legend of Zelda. When the SNES hit, the composers for the big RPG games really stepped it up and made some amazing music. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (VI) come to mind. Also, the soundtrack to Super Metroid was incredible...mostly atmospheric and creepy, but intense & rockin' when it needed to be.

I'm not as impressed with more modern game soundtracks. Mostly it seems that composers are trying to give games more "film score" music, with lackluster results. One exception would be Jeremy Soule, who has done a lot of RPG's for the PC, including Morrowind, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, and several others. The Morrowind score is absolutely beautiful...it's a shame he isn't scoring the next Elder Scrolls game.

People who like the Metroid soundtracks and like prog-metal will probably enjoy the stuff over at http://www.metroidmetal.com. A lot of bands have tried to do rock arrangements of old NES music, and most of them do a pretty poor job in my opinion. But this dude has done some awesome arrangements, with lots of prog-tendencies showing up all over the place.

And of course I have to shamelessly promote my own video game inspired music, which you can check out via the link in my signature.

Nice word. Here's another one: Land (Michael Land). Monkey Island 2 music reminds me of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (listen to "Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite").

You're right. Modern videogame music lacks something...and the worst thing is that people thinks that videogame music is improving just because the sound is getting better.
