The Fall are an institution, and at times sound they belong in one. Another great Krautrock influenced Fall album is Grotesque (After the Gramme), but there's good stuff on nearly all their albums. Code Selfish is a particular favourite of mine, but tends not to feature so much on fan's/critic's lists. They're highly unpredictable live - sometimes atrocious, sometimes brilliant but never boring.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Yeah, I have been a big fan since hearing them on the Peel show in the late 70's, I prefer there earlier stuff and to be honest I haven't heard much by them for the past few years.
The BBC had a very interesting documentry on recently about Mark E Smith in which he didn't come across in the best light.
Also as syzygy said they can be quite eractic live, I have seen both the good and the bad the best was at the University of East London early 80's which a great gig.

Mark E Smith was dragged on incoherent to discuss (and I'm being very generous with this term) the influence of Peel immediately upon news of Peel's untimely death, on BBC 2's highbrow news discussion programme, Newsnight last year. Very bad choice. Looked like a gnome chewing a hornet.

I subsequently caught that BBC 4 documentary on the Fall as well, and its liberal quotes from Peel. After Peel's 'prog rock is bollocks absolute bollocks', Peel  used language which sounded remarkably like the words prog pundits used in the early 70's for prog, to describe his pleasure in Smith & the Fall's music. Bloody inconsistency and so hypocracy John!

(Severely edited and corrected - must stop writing in the early hours)
