I'm talking about the mid-late 90s British band.

Their first album was mostly alternative rock, but from then onwards they headed in a more progressive direction, particuarly with their album Six which features a number of songs over the eight minute mark, a certain degree of complexity, a lot of experimentation such as a song featuring a female opera singer and a man talking, psychadellicy guitar sounds. I've heard them mentioned here before a few times but they're still not added. I suppose they'd be catagorised as Art Rock.

Try listening to songs like Cancer and Being a Girl  to see the band at their most progressive.

I've got two of their albums ... Grey Lantern (which I like a lot, but clearly isn't prog, despite the recurrence of some characters ... and Six, which I really found too boring ... it's in my "to sell" box actually!

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

To my mind a sadly overlooked band, in many ways...

I'd go more for 'Television' from "Six" - a modern progressive epic!

Thanks very much! I'm no expert on the band, so I'm not the best to write a biolgraphy... but here's their official site. I hope it helps.

I like this band a lot.Funny thing I was listening to Porcupine Tree 'Deadwing' the other day and I could hear Mansun infuences.I don't think they would be out of place in the archive under 'prog related'.

Scary.

I'm new to all of this, just starting to think that 'prog' is maybe what I've been looking for in music all these years.  Recently my wife put me onto Porcupine Tree and, while listening to Deadwing (I just adore 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here') and doing a bit of googling on them I found this site.  I've always championed the cause of Mansun from back when Attack of the Grey Lantern was released.  I don't know whay but I have always loved that album; right now it's still basically my number 1 album of all time (okay Wide Open Space seems shoved in as a 'this might get some sales' track but the rest of the album just..well I think it flows and fits with itself superbly, I just love the way different instrumental themes come back all throughout it..anyway..).  So, on coming here I did a search for Mansun and came up with nothing.  Decided to see if anyone had anything to say in the forums and hey-presto, have you saying 'I was listening to Purcupine Tree and thinking of Mansun'.  As I said, scary!

I don't pick up anything consciously linking the two but in my mind there are definite similarities that I think are just due to 'prog' (but what would I know?) hence why I thought they would be listed here.  Oh, and Six grew on me eventually but Attack always seemed a far far better album, I was dissapointed with Six by comparison.

Anyway, just then to register my vote for adding Mansun to the site.  Great band, even if it was only for one album :P

Laters!

Chandy
