I am like MacGyver...I used a little tinfoil, stick of chewing gum and an 8-ball to view through as my connection

A very good friend and colleague of mine installed Dial-up internet on his PC.He used a disc, followed all the instructions to the letter but could not connect to the server.He uninstalled everything and tried again but still no joy. He spoke to AOL who confirmed he had done everything correctly and told him to check his modem was working properly. He rang back to tell them that he thought his modem was broken and what should he do. Realising that my friend had little or no knowledge of computers the Technician asked him how he knew this. Well there is a wire hanging out the back of it my mate replied!
When I quizzed him as to how he thought his computer connected to the internet, he replied, perfectly seriously, that he presumed there must be some kind of magic waves involved!
Hey and this was in January 2004!

In Perú the broadband I can afford costs 30 bucks and guarantees from 10 to 60 KBPS (most of the time is around 40 KBPS).
My telephone line with free rate for Internet between 8:00 pm to 8:00 am plus 24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and hollydays gives me 50.668 KBPS 90% of the time.
So where's the bussines? I have to stay with Dial Up until the real broadband (200+) costs 30 bucks.

DISCUSSIONS NOT RELATED TO MUSIC!!! 
I use 512k Broadband via a company called Pipex. In the UK, they do the best package I know of - unlimited 512k for £23.99 a month. It's also a "bare wires" connection, so I paid no "connection fee" (what a rip-off!!).
I use an ADSL router with NAT, so my entire 100Mb home network shares the single connection without using Windows crappy Internet Connection software (it's no good for my Linux boxes), and I have a wireless 802.11g router so that any computers not near an RJ45 point (e.g. Laptop in the garden) can connect at a reasonable speed.
Stories related to the internet?
Hmm. Give me time - I've been online since 1995, when I started working for Digital, so there are quite a few...

i thank technology for the broadband!!! i got crazy the first time i connected to the internet, however, when design and music grew, and almost nowadays are as heavy as a short movie, is obvious the change to broadband.

Jim Garten and I have the old Squirrel 2000 machines. Super fast rodents that run willy-nilly between countries and oceans to delivery Moravian hand painted placards and slap them into the window on the screen before your face. They are amazingly fast, or so said the slick haired salesmen from outter Moravia. I couldn't believe the price! At twenty-two dollars a minute, it's a steal.
Next time I catch one of those little beasts, I'll tie a Personal Message to his leg so you too can own a Squirrel 2000 of your own.
Gotta look out for the interests of my fellow members.

I was thinking of upgrading to Squirrel 2005 - but I've been told it's a pain in the nuts, as it automatically goes into hibernate mode in autumn...

lol your replies are hysterical! Bravo!! 
Anyway, I used AOL dialup for many years, and just two weeks ago, I switched over to AOL Broadband. I have to say that I'm very pleased with it, it's super fast and I don't have to wait long for all those downloads to finish anymore. Coincidentally, we had to get the Geek Squad(the team of computer experts) over here to reinstall it, after the modem connection was accidentally deleted.

I saw some swallows on electric-wires on some photo's elsewhere on this site, this might suggest their plugged in, therefor I've considered swallow 2005 for it's speed, but I'm guessing it migrates.
