Yes, I'm sick of this whole infantile "best" thing ("worst," too, for that matter). It is not a valid term for the field of art, where subjective matters of individual taste will always be the determining factor in overall popularity.Stern Smile

Too many also seem to think that "best" means "plays fastest on his albums."  Confused Yeesh!Wacko

Favorite, of course. I don't think there's such thing as a best album/band/whatever. It's all opinions.

Thanks, DB (and all)!Embarrassed

When discussing art, is "best" your favourite, or is "favourite" the best?

Wha?Confused

"Favourite." "Best" sounds very infantile sometimes.

I fully agree.

This is good topic, and relevant to a conversation I had with some non prog friends on Saturday night. Sitting in an Indian restaraunt (for a change!) we discussed music. I was quizzed about prog rock and who I thought were the main exponants of it. Of course I was the butt of many a joke that night; the whole Phil Collins thing...you can imagine, I'm sure.

We settled into a worthwhile discussion about prog. They seemed quite intrigued by the whole idea..amused, but intrigued as one may be while watching the local drunk stagger around the town centre waving a bottle of Cider in the air, shouting obcenities. The discussion moved through the great Radiohead debate, through the whole concept album thing and ended up with what actually constituted 'good music' I argued that there was no such thing as either good or bad music, music was art and was therefore subjective.....etc.. basically said what Peter has said here... A few of them agreed, but most actually didn't understand what I was talking about..

The general consensus seems to be that any music that is written by serious musicians whose intention it is to write something interesting and maybe complex, is 'bad' music. Anything that is simple, understated and somehow taps into the 'zeitgeist' is worthwhile. The point of popular music seems not to be the music itself, but what it stands for culturally at the time. That - apparantly - is the criteria by which music in judged on the non prog side of the fence. What a shame..

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Not sure about this part, Peter - it would restrict me from discussing the first Pallas album....

Seriously though - absolutely agree; how about another Poll too...

Ban ..."vs"...

WTF? What's the bloody point of comparing 'Relayer' to 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'

All power to us crusty curmudgeonly progholes - we know what's right and we want it now!

I've just realised how to get the attention (and agreement) of a majority of such poll contributors....

"Best" Sucks!

That should do it
