Topic: Rick Wakeman’s solo records, and his cape Posted: January 25 2006 at 13:41 |
Can anybody give me any insight into the large discography of our caped crusader? Recently I found "The Six Wives of King Henry VIII" and I love every minute of it, pure class
Unfortunately this is the only album i've got from the bugger so what else would you recommend? What's the good and the bad? Anyone else like the record i've mentioned?
I may as well add that I also got "Olias of Sunhillow" which I also think is fantastic, but I know that Anderson never had as big a solo career, but any more recommendations on him would be cool too, Thank You
PS. I mentioned Wakeman's cape for no real reason

I'd recommend 'Criminal Record' after 'Six Wives...' as it follows a similar format as 'Six Wives...'.
The other albums are quite different, but you really can't go wrong until you get to the (imo) terrible 'Rhapsodies'; all are classic albums for keyboard fans like myself.

Buy the Journey .. DVD, it contains many great compositions and you will be stunned by Rick's skills and huge pile of vintage keyboards !

Six Wives stands alone for me.Thats a great keyboard rock album...maybe the best there is.His other albums are lacking any real excitement or inspiration. He choose to go down the cheesey entertainer route as evidenced by performing King Arthur on ice ... mad as a hatter and bedeviled by alcholol.Great 'character' but his solo career is by and large a massive waste of his massive talent.

NO EARTHLY CONNECTION is (not only for me but also for many other fans) Rick´s best and most progressive album. It´s not so cheesy and grandiose like the previous ones (with the exception of 6 Wives, which is of course great) and has a very progresssive nature.

Wow, Richard it looks like we can agree on something!
Wakeman and his stardust-sprinkled cape!!!
Responsible for roughly one third of the bad press of prog!!

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

I have Return to the Center of the Earth, I haven't listened to the
whole thing yet though. I do like "Is Anybody There?" though.

I agree with those that suggest you limit - or at least start - your
search to his early stuff, from "Six Wives" through to "Criminal
Record".
One favourite of mine is "No Earthly Connection" though Rick himself
says that fans' opinions on this tend to be polarised more than any
other album of his!
