Topic: Rick Wakeman VS Dave Greenslade Posted: February 13 2006 at 17:32 |

I know that most of you dont know the keyboardist Dave Greenslade (Colosseum) or you think that is a ridiculous poll because for you Rick Wakeman is far better.
But for my opinion Greenslade is better (unique, complex, atmospheric).

Greenslade is a really marvellous player but so is Wakeman. I'm sitting on the fence but I expect the Yes fanboys will make sure Wakeman wins.

No. Greenslade deserves to be in the same league as Wakeman, Emerson, Minnear, Banks, Bardens and the rest of the greats. It's not a joke at all. On balance I'm going for Greenslade after all.

In terms of technique it's no contest - Wakeman wins by a mile. But Dave Greenslade is a very good technical player and I enjoy his stuff just as much. Wakeman never surpassed the awesome Hammond solo Greenslade did on Colosseum's Valentyne Suite, and I love DG's use of mellotrons on the Greenslade albums.
In short they are both great, but different...

Dave Greenslade is a very, very good keyboardist. But he can't match Wakeman in skill or technical innovation. Compositionally, it's hard to compare them as they are very different, but I could understand an argument that Greenslade deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Wakeman there.

Wakeman for me, much as I enjoy lots of Greenslade's playing. Wakeman is a much deeper and more interesting contributor, especially on Fragile.

While Rick is the uncontested keyboard ruler, there are quite a few just right behind. Greenslade is among that elite group and frankly speaking is utterly deserving of kudos . Therefore , I have annointed Dave a vote because it may never happen again! Rick has been winning polls since 1971!
