what do you think are to Top 5 French Prog recordings from the 1970's? my choices( I dont like alot of foreign lyrics or english prog clone bands) Lard Free - Im Around About Midnight Clearlight - Visions Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene Ose - Adonis Anachroid - same what would your choices be?

I believe Gong usually was considered to be a French band in the 70s. and of course some Magma is missing ("Mekanïk
Destruktïw Kommandöh" would have to be named). of Clearlight I prefer "Symphony" to "Visions", though "Visions" is a good album too. and I would mention the first solo album of Christian Boulé, "Photo Musik"

Heldon-Stand By Richard Pinhas-Iceland Lard Free-Gilbert Artman's Lard Free (1st Album) Magma-Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh Lard Free-Third (I really like this band, quite possibly my favorite French prog band) If Gong are included (although I don't consider them French), I'd add Camembert Electrique to the list. |

Gong for me is a little on the goofy side, not sinisterly
cleaver(ie- mid period Samla or Zappa) just goofballish in their early days. Mid period produced IMO some good but not great recordings. Magma, either too intense for no apparent reason or so far over the top not to easily digestible. I liked some of the mid period ideas but it never seemed to tame into brillance, moreso extremist. But thats what makes progressive music so interesting the wide variety of tastes and experimentation.  But I think Zeuhl music is an unnessary term and should be grouped as part of a wider range of music produced in the 70's called FRENCH PROGRESSIVE, but you know I dont always follow the leader. Ange made some very good albums, their best is Guet-Apens (Capitaine Couer De Miel is wonderful) but my favorite is the live 2-LP Tome VI, this one contains legenadary French progrock like like Fils De Lumiere, Dignite and Sur La Trace De Fees. For me it is one of the highlights in the French progrock history! Other strong albums are Part One from Halloween (an often psychedelic inspired atmosphere and varied keyboards) and the eponymous album from Sandrose (great Mellotron work and beautiful female vocals). Clearlight Symphony and Magma sound unique but are not my cup of tea.

Me too, how can I forget this splendid live album I once wrote a review about on Prog Archives JEAN-LUC PONTY Jean-Luc Ponty: Live  — This live album was my starter to JL Ponty his work. I was in a record shop, watched the cover picture (photos from Armando Gallo, known from his work for Genesis) and was mesmerized by that tiny figure playing the violin, surrounded by two guitarplayers and a keyboardist who was almost hidden behind his huge pile of keyboards! ..... etc.

I'm not too much familiar with French prog(it's too avantgarde-influenced,IMHO).I like Pulsar's "Halloween" and Tai Phong's 75/76 albums."Out of the Night" from TP's debut is one of my favouritest songs ever.My mommy likes it too
