I think it's a good song, definitely. Very innovative in their genre. I don't consider it prog punk. It's not a progressive song, in my opinion...it's still great, though.

NOFX was a very innovative punk band. The Decline is their pinnacle of their achievements. It's as progressive as punk music gets, or at least I haven't heard many other bands doing what they have done. The chord progressions are still pretty simple and theortetical elements (odd times, key changes, etc.) aren't often present, but they did pull off a well written, 18 minute punk song. I would probably still enjoy it if I listened to it today.

That's an ingnorant sounding and uninformed statement I'm afraid .
Next thing you know we'll have everyone saying Punk is the worst genre,
it's awful, etc... It always happens. You know, there are good
and bad sides to every genre. Hmmm, let's see, would I rather listen to
The Damned or Starcastle....tough choice....
This reply is coming out of the way your statement looked to me. The
way you replied there and up above made it seem like you were totally
anti-punk, so if you're not, disregard the comments.

I agree. The Decline is closest NOFX or any other punk came to prog.

1) That's not an ignorant sounding and uninformed statement!!!
2) In my opinion punk is the worst genre, together with rap and disco music.
3) I'm not anti-punk, i respect all musical genres, even punk and rap, but i don't like them.
4) I disagree with the person who said that NOFX can be considered prog!!! Why/when/where a punk band can be considered prog?!?!?!
5) Remember that in '77 punk rock, new wave and disco music killed prog!!!

Punk, in most cases, is garbage. I don't care for punk either, but I can give credit to a handful of punk bands who actually made some noteworthy music.
NOFX is not a prog band, obviously, but their work did make progress in their genre.

What is then? I l used to listen to punk and didn't find anything "more prog", well maybe the Stranglers or Devo if you consider them to be punk.

Isn't there a genre called mathcore, which is something like progressive HC punk?
NOFX is OK. I don't really get the hatred against punk. I don't really like punk either, but at least it is not made to sell, unlike the crap on MTV. Well then there is Green Day, but that's not even punk.
And that song: Greatness~!

Punk is the opposite of prog!!! | Actually punk holds ALMOST the exact same mentality as prog (except prog actually does it.) 1. Sell-outs. If a band signs to a major and becomes more commercial sounding they "sell-out." In both prog and punk it's a BIG deal if a band sells out to the media. 2. Commercialism. Both hands hate the music on the radio and do not want to be played on the radio (especially NOFX, being offered a LARGE sum of cash to play their music videos on MTV, but they refused the money due to their bands pride in not commercializing.) 3. Non-Radio friendly songs. Just as prog bands write 20 minute long songs punk bands write very short (a little less than a minute, under 3 minutes) songs that are definitely not "radio-friendly" length. 4. Lyrics about Peace. This is a big thing in the punk genre with bands such as NOFX and many prog bands such as Genesis, Yes, ELP, Rush, ect. The difference between prog and punk is that prog does what punk wishes it did. Prog songs generally are not only non-radio friendly but they are far too long and too strange to play on the radio. Punk fails to achieve this because despite abnormally short songs, they CAN still be played on the radio, though it's not favored by the stations. Punk and Prog are "ANTI-Establishment" type genres IMO. There are also many problems with punk, though I was just pointing out similarities. A lot of punk is all about fasion and the "scene" as they call it. There are also some violences in the "mosh pits" as they call them. I don't know maybe I'm just rambling.

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention "The Decline" is a very emotional song and it is VERY well-written. And to Motiliatta: There are a decent amount of alternate time signatures and signature changes throughout this as well as key changes throughout. Great song.

I enjoy The Decline very much, and it's hard to deny that the musicians
in NOFX are talented. They understand how to put together music, and
The Decline is proof.
