This is like Brazil playing against Islas Fidji on Soccer. Of course LTE is superior on any point.

^^^lol "superior" ... sounds like a typical DT fan answer.
PLANET X because yes, I thought they were pretty boring when I first listened to Quantum a few times, despite the extreme musicianship. But now days I completely adore Quantum for the chops and its great memorable melodies and its expressive feel.

This is a tough one.
Overall things play out like this:
guitarists in Planet X >>> Petrucci bassits in Planet X = Levin Sherinian > Rudess Donati >>> Portnoy
But unfortunately the guys in Planet X sound like the're playing at 80 - 85% of their ability, whereas LTE reach 100, with Levin capable of more than 100. So on the whole I really can't decide, the music's good on both sides.

I would have thought I'd chimed in - this is a pretty old thread. Anyway, Planet X by a mile for me. I got one LTE album and didn't care for it at all. Whereas Moonbabies and Quantum for me are just brilliant.

keybord to compare rudees to sherinian, is like to compare mozart to charlie parker. rudees is faster but he dont have the special filing that sherinian have. drum donati is a alien, after i heared "alien hip hop" i couldent close my mouth. his much more better then Portnoy. guitar of course petrucci is better, but Tmac is all so good. bass planet x had several bass players, and bill sheehan was one of them, but levin is awesome, and he better then all of they players except sheehan. sherinian = rudees donati>>>>>> Portnoy petrucci>>>>Tmac(the other PX's guitar players are slightly worst then macalpine) sheehan>>>>levin>>all the rest of planet x's bass players. originality:PX>>>>LTE technicality: PX>>>LTE(the weird time signatures, and the jazz parts are really making the difference) i love LTE,but i have to go with planet x.

Planet X for me. I'm a big fan of both, but there is something about about Planet X that makes me like them slightly more.

I'm gonna have to reverse this decision. LTE is nice, but it has very little replayability. PX, on the other hand...stunning. I still need to get Quantum, though.

wow thats tough
LTE only have 2 albums, and Planet X's albums have been getting better since Moonbabies. there's a real jazz-fusion feel finally to it.
Planet X for me. IMO, LTE is just a better version of latter day Dream Theater
btw, who else is for Holdsworth to join Planet X, he seems to fit right in.

I personally think Tony was the perfect man for the job (his work in MoonBabies was phenominal), but if not him, sure, Holdsworth would fit right in as well.
