Hi everyone, hope your all cool

I love most forms of music (ones that tickle my fancy and can get into), as well as prog, classical, metal and rock I do like abit of dance/techno/industrial rock like NIN, Rammstein and Pitchshifter

I just wantd to know peoples opions of these sorts of bands, Im not calling for them to be put into the archive, I am just wondering if this a general thing amoungst fellow proggers and why you like them. My reason is simple: They are differnt and pushing the musical divide like TMV.

I do not know Pitchshifter, but NIN and Rammstein, although being different, sound like utter rubbish to me. I had NIN DVD, and although show might be of some interest, musically I could not stand it within 20 minutes. Politically correct person may call it "not my cup of tea", but I'd go with "complete crap" determination. Sory being negative, but you asked for opinions.....

Pitchshifter and Rammstein you might say, once again, are not my cup of tea.

I must confess, however that I do like NIN.  Not all of their stuff is great, but I think 'The Fragile' is a brilliant album (although the one they just released was pretty bad...).  Also their live DVD was quite amazing, with great lighting and use of video screens and such, plus you can see the band really at work using different keyboards and theremins and such.  Its great to see a band put so much into a live performance.

Maybe Rammstein are a bad example becuase they are at the more metally end of industrial. One of teh best lives abdns you will ever see though so if they roll up in your town or city I urge you to go if just for the showmanship.

Im just asking because bands like Pitchshifter and NIN are abit differnt to your average rock/metal band but please continue I enjoy hearing all your opinions fellow brothers or prog

Trent Rezner is a little short of genius when it comes to the producion of his music. Whether you listen with headphones or out in the open, with lots of base or high treble, you will always hear different little "things" have didn't notice before. The Downward Spiral absolutely blew me away when I first heard it. The truely believable dark, sinister self lothing of Trent's words and voice are enough to make you cringe in fear. An Industrial masterpiece. Pretty Hate Machine, and Broken are both excellent for their development. Some of Trents more recent work is slightly more hit and miss, but isn't that always the case. You can never stay in first place forever.

The Downward Spiral is a brilliant album, nothing short of a masterpiece
with a more balanced/convincing array of moods and a more fresh/
original sound than most of his other works. The rest of his discography
is fairly patchy (though Pretty Hate Machine compared well with the
Depeche Mode albums being released at the time), but Trent Reznor's NIN
projects pretty much got me into the music that I enjoy today and I still
enjoy quite a lot of his music now.

I haven't even heard of Pitchshifter, and I am not terribly keen on
Rammstein, but I am however quite a fan of the German industrial group
Einstuerzende Neubauten (possibly my favourite band at the moment!). If
you haven't heard them already, you should consider trying out Halber
Mensch being the NIN fan you are. They generally wouldn't be terribly
compatible with most people here but if I had to recommend them to a
typical progger I would suggest Tabula Rasa and Silence Is Sexy.

I'm a big fan of Trent's. His production abilities are absolutely top-notch. I agree that The Fragile is absolutely brilliant. (FWIW, "With Teeth" grew on me over time - it's still not his best work, however). Trent's attention to detail is astonishing to me. Plus he writes melodic hooks that don't shake out of your head easily.

Rammstein I find to be derivative, but reasonably skilled at it.

Haven't heard Pitchshifter.

If you want to explore the beginnings of the Industrial movement, I agree that Einsturzende Neubauten is the place to start. I'd also add Throbbing Gristle to that list. Of course Kraftwerk is classic electronic prog - it's all worth exploring, IMO.

I guess if we're on the subject of industrial music in general...

These bands/artists were influential to industrial music:

The Velvet Underground (White Light/White Heat)
Faust
Lou Reed (Metal Machine Music, for better or worse)
Perhaps some other krautrock groups like Tangerine Dream, Neu! and
Kraftwerk, but not as much as Faust

These bands/artists made up a kind of "first wave" of post-punk music
that was either industrial or similar:

Throbbing Gristle (the literal founders of industrial, in that they
distributed under their own label "Industrial Records" from which the
genre got its name)
Suicide
Chrome
This Heat

These bands/artists were key in either industrial or the foundations of
post-industrial music:

SPK
Einstürzende Neubauten
Z'ev
Deutsche-Amerikanische Freundschaft
Test Dept.
Hafler Trio
:zoviet.france:
Psychic TV
Nurse With Wound

These artists were key in either popular industrial-influenced music, or
post-industrial which integrated neo-folk music and/or ambient music
and/or synthpop with industrial influences:

The aforementioned Nurse With Wound and Einstürzende Neubauten
Current 93
Coil
Skinny Puppy
Death In June
Nitzer Ebb
Ministry
Nine Inch Nails

These artists have taken industrial influences but made an even less
accessible/more harsh sound with them, not for the faint of heart:

Whitehouse
Prurient
Merzbow
Masonna
Wolf Eyes

Just to get ye started!

^ Wow! very thorough!

I, for one, would move Skinny Puppy into the "not for the faint-hearted" category tho.

Rammstein have some good catchy songs but they only have good songs and crappy songs - no in between.

I only heard a couple of Pitchshifter songs on tv and i didnt really like them.

NIN on the other hand, have recently become one of my favourite bands. I like the way Trent Reznor manages to shift from harsh industrial to a soft piano ballad. He has excellent composing abilities with a great pop-sensibility and is a very good producer too. Check out the downward Spiral and The Fragile.

Also check out Depeche Mode, Killing Joke and Joy Division if you like NIN, besides the bands mentioned by Hector Gilbert (although i doubt that many NIN fans will like some of the bands mentioned - what makes NIN different from other industrial acts is that their songs are catchy)
