With the new Gentle Giant DVD being released today, I'm reminded of just how hard it can be for us fans of highly original and highly dormant groups to find new material to fill the holes that such bands can, and do, make.

For GG fans like me, there are a whole brace of clone groups (the term clone being used very loosely, mind) who, whilst not snugly filling said holes, can help to keep the pangs of despair at bay. Terreno Baldio are a particularly fine example. With a winning mixture of dissonance, complex, key-heavy rhythms, jazzy chords and a touch of the native sound (they hail from Brazil, so this is welcome indeed), TB combine many elements of what made Gentle Giant superb without once seeming unoriginal. Their music is complex, playful and downright strange, but accessible enough to get almost anyone's toes tapping.

I only have their second (and final) album, but it's an absolute stormer if you let it grow on you, as I have for the past month or so.

So, be ye a GG fan or not, symph lover or RIO addict, I urge you to at least give me the benefit of the dount, follow this link, and give Terreno Baldio at least 3 and a half minutes of your time: http://s58.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2HZ7PAXEQZDR72BTWA431LMAQ 1

Very cool stuff. It reminds me of Return to Forever meets GG, for some reason.

Is this the band's website?

http://terrenobaldio.com.ve/

If it is, then I'm confused - the track they have available there is not prog at all - it's pure folklore.

I doubt it Mike. They disbanded mid-70's and remained very obscure throughout. Probably a case of same name different band.

To those who liked it (and asked where to find it): Hoorah! I'd imagine syn-phonic stock the album, so give them a try.

To those whom I've idiotically misled: The GG DVD is of course released on the 17th of NEXT month, not this one. I am idiot.

I just acquired this one in a trade and although I have yet to play it, this could be one of those ones you mentioned before that can fill that hole.
