I am sitting here making a proto-prog/roots of prog CD compilation and I thought I would open the tracklist to suggestions.  Here's the dozen I have got so far:

1.Tales of Brave Ulysses Cream (live) 1968
2.rejoyce Jefferson Airplane 1968
3.1983...A Merman I Should Turn To Be/

Moon...Turn the Tides, Gently, Gently Away Jimi Hendrix Experience 1968
4.America The Nice 1969
5.Eastern Rain Fairport Convention 1968
6.She Is Loaded Giles Giles & Fripp 1968
7.40,000 Headmen Traffic 1968
8.Seven and Seven Is Love 1967
9.Trouble Every Day Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention 1968
10.Another Country Electric Flag 1968
11.Nights In White Satin Moody Blues 1967
12.A Day In the Life Beatles 1967

Surely I am missing some vital pieces.  What are they?

You might want to add some Spirit tracks

Then some Vanilla Fuge and HP Lovecraft.

Harder to find is The Collectors etc...

A few Deep Purple MkI tracks too

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Colosseum - Valentyne Suite

Also add some Procol Harum if you can, maybe something like Conquistador.

Neat collection; mine would look something like this...

1- In The Beginning- GENESIS

2- The Sky Cried When I Was A Boy- VANILLA FUDGE

3- Are You Happy- IRON BUTTERFLY

4- Gold And Silver- QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE

5- Hung Up On A Dream- THE ZOMBIES

6- No Face No Name No Number- TRAFFIC

7- Night Of Fear- THE MOVE

8- Love Song With Flute- CARAVAN

9- Bracelets Of Fingers- PRETTY THINGS

10- Azrial- THE NICE

11- I Never Know- THE GODS

12- She Comes In Colors- LOVE

13- White Rabbit- JEFFERSON AIRPLANE

14- Shield- DEEP PURPLE

15- Fresh Garbage- SPIRIT

16- Spanish Caravan- THE DOORS

17- White Ship- HP LOVECRAFT

18- Repent Walpurgis- PROCOL HARUM

19- Beyond And Before- YES

20- Legend Of A Mind- MOODY BLUES

22- Listen To The Sky- THE SANDS

23- Revolution- TOMORROW

24- Still I'm Sad- THE YARDBIRDS

25- A Very Cellular Song- INCREDIBLE STRING BAND

26- Light Flight- PENTANGLE

27- I Can See For Miles- THE WHO

28- Sabre Dance- LOVE SCULPTURE

29- We Did It Again- SOFT MACHINE

30- Come And Buy- CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN

31- Space Odyssey- THE BYRDS

32- '75- TOUCH

It'd probably be a double with all that lot, mind... Though, it proves prog certainly didn't come out of a void with King Crimson's first album as I've seen some articles claim...All of this music equals the later, more lengthy workouts in subsequent years, imho...

Nice list Salmacis!

I believe Van der Graaf Generator's "Aerosol Grey Machine" album is proto-prog... so maybe Octopus off of that album?  Or possibly Necromancer?  Being as it was written earlier than others (except Afterwards).

I am being conscious of staying a bit clear of Prog artists like VDGG and Yes that started out before Prog proper got underway... I feel it should be artists that had a formative influence on the genre but didn't "grow up" to be dyed-in-the-witchwood (sorry for the pun, I could not help it) Progmeisters later on.  I suppose this could eliminate GG&F and Traffic but GG&F became another group with another name and Traffic aren't really identified as a Prog band.  It's all kind of arbitrary but I appreciate all of you playing along!
