Can you articulate your negative analysis a bit further so we can contemplate the case against USA more thoroughly??

^^^Certainly, we are talking about that silly one/two hit wonder from 90's? Now I thought that progressive was about intelligent, adventurous music, not of the mainstream. How can you qualify a novelty song pop band, from the 90's, as being proto-prog? Does "proto" not mean prototype? An early blueprint of whats to come? Progressive has come and gone. And how does this A-typical drum, guitar, bass, set-up resemble anything that sounds progressive? If USA become part of the prog pantheon, whats next? Michael Jackson?

Haha! You were thinking of "The Presidents of the United States of America". No big deal, but you should check out this band I've brought up, they were really ahead of their time. They released only one album in '68, which didn't achieve commercial success but a lot of people consider it to be one of the best albums of the late sixties.

USA released two albums, not one:
Their debut album was titled "The United States Of America" (1968); the second album was called "The American Metaphysical Circus" (1969) and presented an enlarged line-up (USA + The Field Hippies); the music in this second work is less improvised, less creative and spontaneous, but more professional, even if not at the same level as their first album, which is a masterpiece. Their music is an original blend of avant-garde, electronica and rock.
When leader Joseph Byrd left the group, he released two solo albums in the mid-70s ("A Christmas Yet To Come" and "Yankee Trascendoodle"), then he collaborated in the RY COODER's "Jazz" album (1978).
Anyway i agree, USA should be included in the Proto-Prog category.

I have never heard of them, but am interested in early American Progressive rock bands so I will check it out. I assume they're american . .no? I just picked up the first Kansas album. Though I was sceptical when soemone recommended the first three Kansas albums on a thread, I was really impressed with this album. I can hear a lot that came later including FM, of course, but also UK and Dream Theater. I am looking forward to getting the next two.

Never heard of The United States Of America. They seem very intriguing. to be one of the best releases of the late 60's and virtually unheard of... thanks for the mention.

Hey Ken, Sounds l;ike youd be interested in Proto-Kaw.Im l;istening to it rightnow. A bit more psychedelic than the Kansas stuff but hearing thier early stuff is cool. And the music can be grand at times.

I got the album, it's amazing. Every serious prog fan should have it. No guitar, but lots of lovely electric violin and electronic stuff. Very bizarre and trippy, how psychedlia should be.

Even if one discards Witchwoodhermit's moment ... this thread is still proof of how rare this band is ... in fact, a decision was postponed simply because too few collabs had heard of it ... and nobody appears to have links/samples to offer ...
