5. King Crimson

On your criteria you would have to include ELP. They sold far more albums than Genesis & Crimson in the 70's!

I wouldnt go with PF, only because they are not nearly as 'prog' as the others
I'd say
King Crimson
Yes
Genesis

1.- YES: I believe that they made four or five of the best albums in the history of prog music in just few years. And the Yes' line ups during the 70's were really AMAZING... Even DRAMA is a great album, but very underrated...
That's my number one, without a doubt...
2.- KING CRIMSON: For its inffluence on almost every contemporary rock style.
3.- PINK FLOYD: Another great band with 4 or 5 superb albums in a short period of time. The difference with YES (to me) its the talent of their musicians. I think that 70's YES has the most talented musicians of that decade...
4.- HAWKWIND: Pioneers in almost everything. I still believe that band is very underrated but their inffluence on contemporary musicians is undeniable...
5.- PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI: The greatest and finest Italian Prog Band of all times...
Greetings...

There is no question that ELP was big and I remember seeing them twice in thier prime. I don't know, I listened to them as much as any other band in the 70's. I guess they have fallen out of favour with me. Of all the above bands, I have the most trouble sitting and listening to them now. Funny how that goes.

Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson should be the undisputed first 3 imo - the rest is debatable, but I'd go for Camel and Gentle Giant.

In hardcore prog circles you often hear about the "big five." On progressive ears(another fan website)they always mention the big five as if it's written in stone and everyone is suppose to agree on who they are. The truth is it's ultimately very subjective and everyone has their own take on it. However, the most common big five list among prog fans(especially the hardcore fans)seems to go like this:
King Crimson
Yes
Genesis
ELP
Gentle Giant
There used to be a thing called the big six which was Yes, ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd but it seems that the big five took over and dished out Tull and FLoyd and GG sneaked it's way on there.

Everybody's got their opinion. I'd have to go with:
Genesis, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Marillion (with Fish)

I've read the big 5 or big 6 used very frequently in different forums to describe the same bands:
Big 5: King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and ELP
Big 6: The big 5 plus Jethro Tul
But it's bery subjective.

Forgot Van Der Graff Generator..
The Big 5 is usually:
VDGG, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and Gentle Giant...(though my fave prog-rock does not include these 5 bands... I do like KC and some VDGG)

the big 5 or 6 are usually named on the biggest, most popular, or those bands that non-prog fans would associate with prog. IMO the top 6 are sort of no-brainers..... everyone else is a cut below on that scale.
Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Floyd, Genesis, Tull
|
It seems like many people agree with the top 5: Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, & ELP. (possibly in a different order!) For me number 6 would be Tangerine Dream, they were very groundbreaking in Electronic Prog & they made many innovations. (With what Robert Fripp terms "devices") I am not as bid a fan of Genesis as the other bands in the top 5. (Maybe because I first heard their songs like "Misunderstanding" & "Illegal Alien" before I found out about the early prog)
