I've noticed that when watching films, there is often excellent music being played in the background.

I haven't got any movie soundtrack CDs. Could anybody recommend what to start with? I'd like something orchestral with no vocals.

i really like the soundtracks of braveheart and gladiator, by james horner and hans zimmer respectively. I recently re-watched lord of the rings and it also has some stunning songs, though quite a number are a little bland.

I would recommend anything by Hans Zimmer, and the Soundtracks to the last samurai, a beautiful mind and the ones lasted above

Italian prog band Goblin made a lot of soundtracks to Italian gialli (genre of movie). They are notorious for frequent collaborating with director Dario Argento.

Also Keith Emerson wrote soundtrack to Inferno by Dario Argento.

Try Peter Gabriel's "Passion" from "The Last Temptation of Christ".

An amazing album.

Try with:

"Blade Runner" by Vangelis

"The Piano" and "Gattaca" by Michael Nyman

"Koyaanisqatsi" by Philip Glass

"Baraka" by Michael Stearns

"The Lord of the Rings" by James Horner

"The Omen" by Jerry Goldsmith

"More" by Pink Floyd

"Clockwork Orange" by Walter Carlos

Keep an eye on the movie "Buffalo 66", in that soundtrack you will find songs made by Yes and King Crimson.

Almost every soundtrack made by Danny Elfman, specially "Big Fish" and "Edward Scissorhands"

I still enjoy Randy Newman's great score for "The Natural."  One of the best ever.

Lord of the Rings was composed by Howard Shore not James Horner. Danny Elfman is good too, i like his Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs soundtracks

John Newton Howard is the best Film Scorer. The M. Night Shamalad films and other stuff.

I'm a film composer as well, and he's me biggest influence

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

As a matter of fact I'd recommend any soundtrack by Morricone.
