Topic: Keyboards: In the Cage vs Siberian Khatru Posted: April 10 2006 at 14:41 |
For some reason these two solos remind of each other, although they don't particularly sound like one another. I love them both dearly and won't mention my slight preference since I started the poll.

Siberain Khatru is one of my very favourite tracks, and the harpsichord solo is a blinder, so as good as In the Cage is, there's only one choice for me!

Tough one to pick here but I lean towards Tony's "In the Cage" because (on three sides live medley) he has to adjust to some wild tempo changes while holding the whole thing together.

I´d go for Tony Banks´s solo in "In the Cage", both speedy and melodic.

The purpose of one song is to transmit a feeling, message or ide. In the cage is a claustrophobic track, the vocals are breathtaking and Tomy manages to enhance instrumentally the pain and anguish that Rael is feeling not only trapped in the cage, but looking at his btrother John betraying him and turning his head.
What a masterpiece.

In the cage Absolutely! Though Siberian Khatru is very good as a whole (and also the Wakeman solo), the real killer harpsichord solo is the one by Jon Lord in Rat Bat Blue...hats off! It's a pity it's so short!

I am a big Yes fan but in this poll, I give my vote to MR. Tony Banks and his excellent performance on "In the Cage"...

I like Wakeman pretty much a lot more than Banks...but In the Cage is one of my fav keys solo...so, he wins this time!

In The Cage
I picked In The Cage. Tony banks amphetamine-like synth solo worked great against the claustophobic and tension-ridden song. I think it actually starts at the beginning of the song with Banks' organ intro. Like the Slipperman solo. As usual, masterful arrangements.
Siberian Khatru has always been one of my favorite YES songs, it was a very close second. Wakeman's and Bank's keyboard solos are very similar in style. But I felt Steve Howe's guitar pretty much dominated the whole song, though. A fantastic arrangement and YES at their best.

I hate to choose. I heard In the Cage first and it was an early introduction into the gigantic potential of an instrument to simply overwhelm one with its awesomeness. If I heard Siberian first, it might go either way. I will say that the solo in 'In the Cage' fits the music perfectly as aforementioned by someone in the sense that the emotion it conveys is perfectly in sync with the story and the atmosphere.
