i'm probably sticking my scrawny neck out here, but something's really buggin' me  -  what the boss would probably call a "sticky topic", but..... should LED ZEPPELIN be included in prog archive???? here's the evidence ; YOUR TIME IS GONNA COME, DAZED AND CONFUSED, THE BATTLE OF EVERMORE, STAIRWAY, THE RAIN SONG, NO QUARTER....  have a listen to those classic tracks and then tell me if they ain't  prog! if so i shall throw my prog hat into the river styx and hang my prog head in shame forever. Deep Purple are here and are a worthy, but less so, case than ZEP....so , YES, NO or WHAT...??!!!!!Confused

your evidence is... underwhelming hahahhah.  Just kidding of course.. some of those songs are great prog songs.  To use a great 'Ivanism' in reverse. ELO did some discoesque songs and albums... doesn' make them a disco group  anymore than a couple prog songs made Zeppelin a prog group. Zeppelin was a rock group, an incredible successful one, that did incorporate other influences in their music.  ahahha what successful group hasn't done that.... they couldn't steal poor songwriters songs and redo old blues songs forever could they. So.. for what it's worth.. an impassioned NO from Micky on Zeppelin.  Besides the day this site gets overrun with the roving bands of prepubescent  Zepheads that prowl internet chat sites is the day this site loses a great deal.  I can see it now....(every 3rd or 4th thread)

What is the greater prog album

Led Zeppelin IV
or
Foxtrot

hahahha.

This has been done before.  They have some moments but they are a blues based band.  Great band though.

Deep Purple being here so therefore so must Zeppilin?

Not a viable argument. deep Purple are Proto prog, Led Zeppelin are at best Prog related so must be judged by different merits.

I don't think they'll be included, sorry.

Led Zep is one of my favourites bands ( next to mine beloved GG ), but I still haven't made my mind up about their inclusion or not.

They're not really prog, but I wouldn't be fussed if they were listed here. Excellent band with occasional strong prog leanings.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Ok. So any album which is less progressive than Foxtrot isn't prog?

BTW: Nobody says that Led Zeppelin are a prog band, or that they should be added as a prog band. Ok, some people may request that ... but 95% of those who are in favour of the addition say: prog-related.

No. I love them to bits, but they don't belong here. The whole prog related thing is a joke IMO, and they're not prog enough to pe in proto prog. They influenced hard rock and metal by far more than they did prog.

One of my favourite bands, but they just really aren't prog. Well some songs (No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, Stairway to Heaven, etc.) are sorta prog-ish, but not really that much. Slightly prog-related at most.

I'm on the fence here. Were I to argue for Led Zep's prog-... uh, prog-ness (?) I would use totally different songs. In the Light and No Quarter are, in my opinion, definitely prog songs. Maybe even some more songs like Kashmir, Stairway, or Carouselambra qualify. (I promise I'm not just picking their longest songs, it's a sheer coincidence Tongue).

As much as I love all those songs, and almost everything Zep did, I just can't see them as a real prog band in the same way as Genesis or even Deep Purple is. Prog-related, though? I don't see why not. It becomes increasingly difficult as Zep's career goes on to find bands, including prog bands, that didn't include some aspect of Zep in their own work. For example, Tool has been known to do a fairly sizeable number of Zep covers at their shows (They even did a studio version of No Quarter... which I don't recommend.)  Zeppelin's influence alone is enough to include them to an extent.

Maybe if only IV and after were included... I through III were worthless in terms of prog.
Proggin' it up eight days a week...

My thoughts exactly (though I voted for yes). They're much too influential to be left out. Perhaps we should consider a separate section for those classic late '60s bands like Zep, Cream and The Who that had some influence on the development of prog, at least as far as some seminal bands are concerned.

Some of their songs are very proggy (Achilles Last Stand, No Quarter, Kashmir...) but most of their music is not even prog-related. I don't mind if they're included, but I don't think they should be.

Well, the Beatles, some death metal and even Fairport Convention are here....Confused

What the hey -- just bring in ALL the 70s & 80s bands we like. (Prog is a meaningless term now, in any case.)Stern Smile

Not prog, but prog related for sure. If Queen's here, so should Zep be. Look at the description of the prog related category and you'll see. Wink
