All the songs on this album are terrific, but Drapery Falls defines the great balance between death and prog metal.

What is prog rock ?
It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential. K.Emerson |

I love Opeth and el bothy if this is your only one get more! anyway i personally think this album should be taken as a whole so this is hard to pick i love all the songs on this album. there's that beautiful intro to Dirge for November, the section in Bleak where the guitar is still shredding but Mikael's voice switches to clean "Mist ripples round your thin white neck, and draws me a line", not to mention the beauty and simplicity of patterns in the ivy... woops this is sounding like a review ok my favorite is gonna be The Drapery Falls

This opeth album is very special to me.
It sort of digress from their route (because of tracks like Bleak and BWP) but in the same time keeps their musical legacy (tracks like Leper affinity and Drapery falls). It has some of the same format introduced in Still Life in terms of album structure, if you get my meaning (if not, never mind).
I can listen to all Opeth albums anytime, no matter what mood I am (only few other bands can I do this with), and this particular album gets me into this mixed melancholic and relaxed and comfortable mood at the same time.
My favourites from this album are Leper Affinity, Bleak (what an intro!), Drapery falls and Blackwater Park (what an amazing scream does Akerfeldt give at the end of the song!!!). They may not be over complex (though Leper and Drapery are) or contain their best work (though I believe it does) but the sheer power and emotions emanating from these songs has a profound effect on me.

Not to speak for the guy, but my opinion is that Harvest is very welcommed after heavy tracks like The Leper Affinity and Bleak. The song also has some great chord progressions and a nice solo, but I believe the weakest track goes to Dirge for November; really nothing in particular that makes me think this way, possibly because it takes quite a bit to get started (that's not to say that I do not enjoy Mikael's isolated vocals and minimalism in the beginning though.) I chose the Funeral Portrait oddly enough. I love the solo and the old school death metal riffs in the second part of the first verse. I also believe that Mikael was trying to accomplish what he did with "Baying of the Hounds", while different, I get the same feeling from both of these songs. |

Probably Drapery. I prefer their clean stuff (I've only recently been
able to listen to their heavy) so I think "Damnation" is by far their
best album. Am I alone?
