Patriotic in what way? I'm a moderately big Springsteen fan, but even someone that kind of knows Springsteen knows he's almost as left wing as you get. Him waving the flag during Born in the U.S.A is a mockery.
What does him being a Leftist have to do with his patriotism?Just because his political views are at the other end of the spectrum he's 'mocking' the USA?I thought for sure people were smart enough to not make generalizations like that --- doesn't the fact that rich CEOs exploit this country's workers PROVE that being a 'flag-waving patriot' doesn't mean loving this nation?

Well lets see, the flag doesn't symbolize anything that a "leftwinger" would stand for. If you are a flag waving patriot, you will not hold Springsteen's views. He would not be waving the flag to represent pride for his country when he disagrees with most things that the government is doing, especially today. Look up the origin of why we created the flag and you will than know why a flag waving patriot would never be a left wing liberal (or at least in 99% of the cases.)

I don't know why a left-winger cannot be honestly and consciously patriotic? Embarrassed

I said "patriotic" instead of "nationalist" (at least in my native language we had distinction between both words Smile).

BTW, some Brazilians stars considered as being in the left had shown to be patriotic - real patriotism includes a great dose of criticism, questioning and complaining... and why not? A real Motherland shall be fair to all her children. Star

^^^ We have that distinction in the States too, for those who care about semantics.  Here is an approximate spectrum:

Patriotism = I love my country.

Nationalism = My country is the best.

Jingoism = My country is the only one that matters.

You forgot one;

Republicanism = all others hate my country and they must be stifled

No, I meant all the political causes he's spearheaded, and his voting record (he's voted in almost every election since 1978), he's got guitars painted like the flag, and his van is red white & blue.

Also, Billy Joel is largely patriotic, even though he likes to point out the tragic events that have happened in/to this country.

Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth actually own a shop that sells items of a 'Patriotic' nature.  It's called the Spirit of '76, or something similar.

In England patriotism means having a stupid flag flying from your (foreign) car when the World Cup is on, but ignoring laws and being a dole blagger the rest of the time.  People are scared to be patriotic as you will probably be labelled racist, and apparently you aren't free to (dis)like who you want any more :)

Neil's had children in USA and has lived here for decades. It's funny how (IMO) one of the greatest symbols of American patriotism and "The American Dream" (if there stillis one?) is a Canadian. LOL

I don't think Springsteen has guitars painted like the flag. He almost always is playing his wood colored Fender Telecaster if not an acoustic. Not sure about his van though.

Absolutely! The real patriots should always be questioning and trying to self improve the country. But people have different ideas of what a real patriot is.

Yes, that's what I call a patriot... to love our country does not mean to accept everything. Instead we have the obligation to struggle always for improvements.

Many artists do it honestly and frankly. Smile

We make a distinction too - that's why we have two different words.

I guess the confusion raised with the (in)famous "Patriot Act", especially for the youngsters... Confused

Do people see the patriotism of foreign bands and artists as a form of imperialism to their own respective country.
eg when I was a child I remember Superman picking up the American flag and holing it on the moon. To a non american its just plain offensive, to me it would be no different if he waved the former soviet flag or the Chinese flag. So basically if the patriotism of foreigners is displayed overseas I see it as a form of imperialism.
eg Why should a band sing about their pride in the USA in Australia or Denmark; its just stupid to me. I don't mind if they love their country but I don't won't to know about it.

Actually I agree with you on that point. I also find it offensive when I see our soldiers and Marines overseas supposedly 'peacekeeping' and they're hoisting an American flag over someone else's country. Really poor message to be sending IMHO.

Zakk Wylde is so patriotic that if he's not careful he'll soon disappear up his own arse! Really he should have gone to fight in Iraq.
