For me it is only a very very good album of AOR... And for you?
For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

I'm probably a rare thing here that actually really loves this album.

To it pleases me many.

Perhaps the sole true lack of this album is that is too awkward to 1986. In fact this is a disc of Prog AOR (Art POP, is the true just name). Also I can blunder myself, but this sub genre togheter with the Symphonic Prog (and all Classic Prog) given life to the Neo Prog. And this album, to mine modest warning, is a Proto Neo Prog album.
According to you a wrong idea of this album?

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

this album was a disappointment when i bought it, as was "asia". some things don't quite work, great albums can't be created in a laboratory, they just happen!

The album is not so bad in its instrumental parts; the big problem are the vocals, which are in my opinion "lardy" (kind of a wordplay with the name of the singer, Max Bacon). As soon as he shuts up, the album becomes excellent. But these vocals totally ruin it.

I had such high expectations for this album. My college roommate bought when it was released, and played it for us. We just looked at each other in disbelief. It was even cheesy by AOR standards. It wasn't even as good as Asia, and I hated that.

What she said! Smile

I was just getting into Yes and Genesis right around the time this album was released, so my enthusiasm was probably higher than it was for those more familiar with Hackett and Howe at that point.

Yea I remember being very excited about the release of this album and being very dissapointed when it came out. As a whole the album doesnt really hold up although there are some really good musical moments on it.

No way for several reasons:

  1. Not Prog
  2. There are worst albums
  3. Just a couple of decent chords by Hackett and Howe is enough to make it at least listeneable.

I leave that "honor" to:

Re-Works - Brain Salad Perjury

Track Listing - Disc 1
1. Re-Works One [Fanfare 2000 Golden Jubilation Mix] (7:29)
2. Re-Works Two (5:43)
3. Re-Works Three (5:24)
4. Re-Works Four (10:43)
5. Re-Works Five (6:13)
6. Re-Works Six (5:50)
7. Re-Works Seven (10:33)
8. Re-Works Eight (3:22)
Track Listing - Disc 2
9. Re-Works One [Fanfare 2002-Extended Golden Jubilation Mix] (7:26)
10. Humanoid (6:03)
11. Inside Out (4:01)
12. Plastic Flowers (4:32)
13. Palmstone (9:17)
Track Listing - Disc 3
14. Fanfare 2002 [Digger's Mix] (9:43)
15. Fanfare 2002 [Earth Loop Mix] (8:42)
16. Fanfare 2002 [Public Order Mix] (6:28)
17. Fanfare 2002 [the Pilgrim Mix] (8:28)
18. Fanfare 2002 [X-Ert's Esoteria Mix] (3:57)

HahahahahahahahahahahahhahAHAHahaHAHahahaHaaaaa!

Ah... I hate dance mixes. I sometimes prefer alternate versions of songs though...

Like Caravan's 'Aristocracy' which I first heard on PA... but I heard the alternate version on 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' and I loved it! It just sounds BETTER... not sure why though... might be the vocals.

I think BaldFriede got it right: Max Bacon is simply awful. But this album isn't as bad as some people picture it. It's simply not prog. I'd like to listen to any live recording from GTR, BTW.

I don't know if it's a "bad" album as such - I just found it very disappointing; two of the biggest names in progressive rock guitar get together and release...

...a horrid AOR album with Max Lard(on) vocals.

Exactly what happened with me, although I was the one who purchased the album. I still have the album and it is in near mint condition, it has only been played a couple of times and not once in the last 10+ years.
Bad albums? The same thing happened with Asia - one word describes that album for me - irritating! It too is collecting dust on my shelf, if not for the Dean cover there would be no redeeming qualities for that disc (just not my cup of tea I guess).

I remember seeing an MTV special on the making of the album and they made it sound like the best thing since sliced cheesecake. I bought the vinyl but never got much into it.  The production was crappy which didn't help but since MTV would go to all that trouble to make a documentary, I figured I must be missing something.  So I didn't outwardly hate it.  But it is pretty subpar and an album that I never listen to.  Ugh.
