The Locando delle Fate album is breathtaking, at least the first two tracks, then it bounces around from real good to really good.  Later you find out that Locando Dell Fate translates to something like "Inn of the Fairies."  Then you realize why none of us have girlfriends.  We're all pussies.

I just have to clearify one thing:

Il Balletto di Bronzo: YS is the correct album, and the
band's only real 70's prog outing. And I would think its an extra
relevant reccomendation, because i know the topic starter  listens
to a lot of Progmetal. This is a hard, tecnically complex, almost
modern sounding prog album. Its also regarded a classic. While Sirio
2222 is a Hendrix inspired hard rock album, for fans only.

Regarding BdB: Yes, I got so much from studying PA's rating - it only reflected it's placement in last-fm users' minds! I knew of the status YS has got, seems S2222 is more played though (Less Prog?!)

And yes, it was a ridiculous amount of work, but good escape from the thesis I should be writing!

But thanks for correcting pure numbers with some true insight!

Sleeping hours here - so good night!

Il Balletto di Bronzo: YS (some dark, complex 70's prog metal for you)
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso: Darwin! (Their peak as well as the whole Italian scene.)
Museo Rosenbach: Zarathustra (Very heavy progrock concept album)
Premiata Forneria Marconi: Storia di un Minuto  (One of the best debuts ever)
Metamorfosi: Inferno (Also a dark conceptual album. Lots of Moog )

You can stream a song form all these albums. Don't be scared by the operapoppy Metamorfosi song. Its not very representative.

Clap (though I like Io Sono Nato Libero more than Darwin)... 4 of my 5 choices... would make it 6 with Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Piu.... and 7 with Osanna's Palepoli.... and 8 with Dedicato A Frazz....

I better stop hahahha.

For only 5 essential albums, I recommend:

- PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI - "Per Un Amico"
- IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO - "YS"
- BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO - "Io Sono Nato Libero"
- MUSEO ROSENBACH - "Zarathustra"
- LOCANDA DELLE FATE - "Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Più

In fact, there are still many more.

The disc that follows is not carved from an Italian group, but Scottish. Is nevertheless an excellent Italian disc, in the sense that the songs accidents from an Italian group seem. Is therefore a disc that I assimilate to those of the sub sub genre Italian Symphonic Prog. It it is:

Question: What are the 5 essential Italian Symphonic Prog Rock albums? You can also post longer lists, but the main rule is:

Don't post "redundant" albums - albums which are similar in style. Try to post the shortest list that you can imagine which covers all major different "sub-styles" of Italian Symphonic Prog Rock.

What?
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes

What?

In the sense that it has a Latin soul, that it is a disc like to those of the PFM and that is is a cheerful disc some of the Italian scene. Well... It is a solar disc, how is solar Italy.

I just have to say thanks for this post. I too have just begun to explore Italian prog, and could use some help. So for I have heard PFM "Storia di Un Minuto," and Le Orme "Contrappunti." I love the PFM album (even though I can't understand the lyrics), but the jury's still out on Le Orme.

Uomo Di Pezza is my favorite by Le Orme.... check it out.. I bet you'll like it.

Your next purchase should be Zarathustra...  a stunning album. Essential Italian prog album.
