The Prog album of the Moody please myself, are excelling. Nevertheless "The Magnificent Moodies" believe the album that closes an era and another one opens of it. For this (and alone for this) vow for "The Magnificent Moodies"

'Seventh Sojourn' is my overal favourite. It seems darker and more melancholic than its predecessors, which appeals to me.

Mike Pinders Mellotron (or Chamberlain) work is fantastic on 'SS' especially on 'Land of Make Believe' which is an absolute classic.

I will go with "On the Threshold of a Dream" but "In Search of the Lost Chord" and "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" are VERY close seconds.

like many groups who have had a rich history, many fans seem divided over certain periods of that history and segregate them.  sometimes affected by personnel problems or changes in musical direction, the best groups have had to adapt to prevailing "winds"  and change to survive, such as genesis, yes and the moody blues. i enjoy their early music, such as "the lost chord", "threshold" , "question of balance" and "seventh sojourn" , and i like their latter day albums as much if not more, such as "octave", "long distance voyager" and "the present", they are fantastic albums, but many fans are divided over this. anyone have any strong opinions ?Confused

I think the law of diminishing returns applies here, as a progressive (LOL) decline sets in - at least in respect of their willingness to try something different or address issues. Even today they are classy musicians (just listen to their latest live album), but they have largely settled into a comfortable-love-song-ballad kind of groove. Which is a pity really.

I would suggest Long Distance Voyager is definitely the best by some distance, but each of the others has a percentage of good stuff on them - it's just that the percentage gets progressively smaller.

I'm fairly new to the Moodies albums (thanks to the remasters). So far I'm torn between Days of Future Passed and Lost Chord. Think I'll go for Days.

    I had been familiar with the Moodies through the radio since my earliest listenings. Oddly enough, the first album I bought was "Long Distance Voyager." Most likely because it was a hit at the time. My true appreciation for them started the first time I heard "Question." I then began exploring the rest of the albums. I thought this would diminish my affection for LDV, but it didn't. I still like it. "Question", however, remains my favorite.

IMO the Moody Blues were never as Prog and good as when Moraz joined them, Long Distance Voyager was like a breeze of fresh air full of oxygene in the sofocating and boring 80's.

I'm looking at getting the German Import CD of "This is the Moody Blues", and I wonder if anyone knows anything about the sound quality of that release or if it was remastered or not.  I just wondered if it sounds good or is a bad choice as far as mastering is concerned.
