Well, let's discuss this great Russian composer!

The other day I finally got around to buy and sit through

Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) and
Jeus de cartes

And it was GREAT and MARVELOUS experience! It sounds soooo proggish. By now I can't think of any other composer who excites me that much.

Prog-rockers, you MUST listen to these records, because that's where prog-rock got its tricks.
Finally I understand all these references by Zappa

So I'll surely be collecting Stravinsky. Recommend me some more.

"the rite of spring" is a fantastic piece, originally a ballet, apparently it was so ahead of its time it caused a storm of protest and disapproval on its first performance, near riot apparently! other works i can recommend by Stravinsky are his Violin Concerto (played by hilary hahn or anne-sophie mutter), "Symphony in C" and "Concerto in D" conducted by Von Karajan, "Firebird" ballet Antal Dorati/LSO, also  "Petroesjka" and "Pulcinella".Thumbs Up

"Rite of Spring" ROCKS! Just listen to the use of percussion... It's more than prog, it's classical music's heavy metal!Wink

I only know the Firebird Suite (which Yes have used to start their concerts and Manfred Mann did a good version of called "Starbird") and The Rite of Spring. Both are amongst the few bits of classical music I really like.

as composer Arthur Honegger once said: "the 'Rite of Spring' is the atom bomb of music".
I also recommend "Soldier's Tale" by Stravinsky (besides what has already been mentioned by others)

What he said. This is the complete ballet, not the suite, and one of my favorite versions. It is on the Mercury Living Presence label. The analog sound and the performance are both spectacular. Buy it immediately, you won't regret it.
So much music. So little time.

Clap I used Soldier's tale in a presentation in music class.
