This is NOT  thread on women in progresive rock.

My first encounter with female vocals was with Th Pretenders, Mostly Autumn and Renaissance.  After listening to these bands, I have drawn a conclusion about female vocals in general.

In The Realm of Female Vocals, there is this endless, dark, elastic line that separtes confidence and sluttiness.

confidence
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sluttiness

Rebellious Women like Courtney Love, Pattie Smith , and Grace Slick fall into the sluttiness catergory but demonstrate outward confidence, which i respect, and that looks something like this.

confidence
slutt---------------------------------------------------------------tiness
slick, love, smith

its almost an intrusion of sorts

Conversely, women like Heather Findlay, Natalie Merchant, Chrissie Hynde, Bjork, and Stella Vander fall into the confident category yet borderline sluttiness at times.  These are the kind of women, and vocals for that matter, I enjoy most.

merchant, hynde, bjork, findlay

most admirable type of female vocals
con--------------------------------------------------fidence
sluttiness

Which is your favorite kind of female vocals?

Which catergory would classify your favorite female singer?

Does anyone walk the line?

I think we have to be fair here, when you say slutiness
In the 70īs Jagger and Plant would then have to be considered Sluttish.
It was really all about not conforming, but I understand what you mean about Patti Smith.

If anyone walks the line it's Kate Bush!
She is ever so confident (what other 20 year old person male or female would have had enough confidence to put out an album like The Kick Inside, with songs written at the age of 16/17?) and she can be slutty if necessary. Plus she has many progressive moments.

Bizarre topic - I have 10,000 progressive, psychedelic, acid-folk, hard rock and garage beat albums by female artists, and it would never even occur to me to classify or gauge them on a concept such as "sluttiness". Nor do I see how the aggressive, feminist sexuality of Grace Slick or the androgynous, almost asexual presentation of Patti Smith could in any way be called "slutty" - to me, the word conjures up images of "artists" like Madonna and Britney Spears who use their sexuality to sell mediocre music.
